Review of the Alibis Collection

Death Row by Freida McFadden

The Ex-Wives Club by Sally Hepworth

False Note by David Lagercrantz

The Skydivers by Chris Bohjailian

Good Neighbors by Chad Zunker

Small Things by Wanda M. Morris

4 stars for this one. I thought the first story in the “Alibis Collection” was really strong and honestly the best out of the bunch. I thought that McFadden actually stretched herself in this one in a good way. I didn’t see the twists coming and loved how she tied things up her. “Death Row” follows a woman named Talia Kemper has been on death row for years after being convicted of the murder of her husband. We find Talia remembering things before she was […]

Destiny or destruction?

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

October 29, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Soulmate tells the tale of married couple who have recently relocated to a cliffside home overlooking the pacific ocean. There is only one drawback to their panoramic view: the drop. The drop is where people who reach the end of their tether decide to end their lives. Gabe has become a local celebrity by intervening and helping these lost souls find the will to go on, and his wife, Pippa, couldn’t be prouder. Together with their two children, they seem to have an idyllic […]

The Soulmate

The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth

November 21, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Well not quite up to par with Hepworth’s other works. And it’s really only because the back and forth between two women in separate timelines just didn’t work after a while as well as the lack of depth on some of the characters especially after a bunch of things get revealed. For example, I get why Hepworth included Amanda’s point of view, but after a while it added nothing […]

Getaway Short Story Collection

Uncharted Waters by Sally Hepworth

His Happy Place by Zakiya Dalila Harris

Stockholm by Catherine Steadman

Belle Mar by Luanne Rice

Catch Her in a Lie by Jess Lourey

Shell Game by Rumaan Alam

November 8, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

So I read through all of the “Getaway” collection the other day and thought some stories hit harder than others. Per usual, here’s my rating per story in the collection. “Uncharted Waters” by Sally Hepworth (3 stars)-Yeah this one shocked me too. Probably because I have pretty much loved most of Hepworth’s mystery novels set in Australia. This one is also set in Australia, but follows a married woman named Ella who is going on a cruise without her husband Mac. While on the cruise […]

Rep Square: The Good Sister

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth

October 12, 2021 by msvreadsbooks Leave a Comment

I’m using this as my REP bingo square.  The Good Sister is told from the perspective of two Australian sisters (and twins), Rose and Fern. Rose is an accomplished interior designer married to a wonderful man and all she wants is to be a mother. Through her journal entries, however, we hear about her fraught relationship with her own mother’s narcissistic ways.  And Fern, while not explicitly identified as such, seems to have Autism Spectrum Disorder given her sensory processing issues, social discomfort, and love […]
