You Really Shouldn’t Share Mascara…That’s My Takeaway From All of This

February 10, 2017 by Melina Leave a Comment

This book keeps popping up on book lists everywhere and then someone in our book club picked it, but then changed her mind to have us read Just Mercy  instead (this was last year which is why I don’t have a review for it).  But…I had already purchased the book and so I decided that eventually I would get to it. After reading The Kind Worth Killing I realized that I’ve been missing suspense and mystery in my life.  Soooo…I turned to The Woman […]

Maybe don’t read this one alone in the dark?

January 31, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So our leading lady, Leonora is out of the blue invited to an old friend’s bachelorette party.  Only we’re in England, so it’s called a hen party.  Or a hen do?  Something henny.  Anyway, she hasn’t talked to Clare (the hen / bride) in nearly a decade.  She’s not really sure why she’s invited, but she asks another friend to go too (she’s also invited).  The house they end up at is in the woods, and kinda creepy.  Leonora is called Lee, Nora, and Leo, […]

Fun Thriller

January 30, 2017 by Rachie3879 3 Comments

My book club is starting the year off with a fast-paced thriller, In a Dark Dark Wood by Ruth Ware. In all the reviews it’s compared to novels like Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. I suppose this is due to the fact that this novel has both unreliable narration and really unlikable people. Aside from that I think the similarity is minor. The novel is the story of Nora Shaw, a crime fiction writer living in London. She is startled to receive […]

Something’s afoot on the fjords

January 20, 2017 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So once again, I can’t remember how I got onto this book, but I feel like someone recommended it to me. I put it on hold at my library like 4 months ago, and there were 52 people ahead of me. I finally just got it last weekend. At my library, you can’t renew books that have holds on them, so I knew I only had two weeks to read this one. It only took me 3 days. And if I started earlier on day […]

Well written thriller with a protagonist worth rooting for!

August 16, 2016 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

With a title like The Woman in Cabin 10, this novel already brought to mind all of the “girl” thrillers we’ve had lately — Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, The Luckiest Girl Alive, etc — which all have messy, unlikable woman as protagonists. So when The Woman in Cabin 10 begins with our main character waking up drunk and fuzzy-headed in the middle of the night, I may have let out an audible sigh. BUT I was pleasantly surprised with this one, which stars a flawed but likable woman […]
