Bad decisions, good book

Brooklynaire by Sabrina Bowen

June 25, 2022 by persnickety chick 2 Comments

This is a happy review, but a story of poor decisions.  I bought one of those compilation books from amazon – you know the 20 books for 99 cents ones, lots of authors.  I did buy it because I get promotional emails from the author of the book  I am talking about.  With these compilations there are generally a couple of cliffhanger teaser books, intended to suck you in, a couple of meh books and one or two books that are great.  Brooklynaire is […]

A Fun Romance/Mystery, Perfect for the Beach or the Airport

Hello, Summer by Mary Kay Andrews

June 23, 2022 by GentleRain 2 Comments

I am someone who is very sensitive to the formatting and trim size of a novel, so I think a lot of my enjoyment in this novel was partially related to how much I liked the mass market formatting they used. A couple of years ago a lot of publishing companies switched to this taller, skinnier format that doesn’t work well with my hands, but the edition I got at the airport of this book was a more squat square format that was perfect. And […]

The Twelve Days of Christmas: Birds Galore

The Partridge by Kit Morgan

The Dove by Shanna Hatfield

The Hens by Merry Farmer

The Calling Birds by Jacqui Nelson

June 21, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Sometimes you’re just in the mood for plain and simple mail order bride romances. Lots of them. The Partridge (Kit Morgan) – 3 stars Reverend Chase Hammond, determined to save the town of Noelle, sends away for mail order brides to prove that the town can be a true civilized community. Of course, when the women actually arrive, things don’t run smoothly according to plan. This is the first book in the series, so a lot of the story involves legwork setting up the scenario […]

BookTok Made Me Do It

The Land Where Sinners Atone by V.F. Mason

June 20, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Phoenix Hale is convicted of manslaughter for the death of Zachary King’s wife, and he, unsatisfied, arranges to make her life an endless torment. But it turns out Phoenix is innocent, and when she is released, the pair are forced to work together to stop a serial killer before they can strike again. I am not one much for BookTok, but it is a fun way to find books I’d probably not come across otherwise. The video about this book attracted me immediately because of […]

A Delightful Gem of a Novel

Man and Wife by Wilkie Collins

June 16, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Wilkie Collins is best known for The Moonstone and The Woman in White, but I highly recommend this enjoyable social issues novel. The action keeps moving and the morals come quick and fast. Collins knew how to write a fully realized character and how to keep the reader’s attention continuously engaged. Man and Wife involves a tangle of relationships and social questions of the day. The main issue Collins is dealing with here is unfair marriage laws and the horrible situations women would be left in due to their […]

Spinster Meets Beast

Chasing the Earl by Kathleen Ayers

June 15, 2022 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Emmagene and Henry attend a house party to support their friends’ wedding, but because they are not very popular people, they are constantly thrown together by the hostess – which turns out to be not a bad thing after all. I picked up this book because I was interested in how the author would convince me to invest in a romance with two quite unlikable leads – truly unlikable, with her cutting sternness and his beastliness, not merely unpopular. Spoiler alert: the author manages it. […]
