The least toxically masculine thing you will ever read.

Check, Please!: #Hockey, Vol. 1 by Ngozi Ukazu

January 11, 2019 by narfna 3 Comments

So if you go over to Goodreads and scroll down the first page of reviews, you’ll see that nearly every review starts along the lines of, “THIS WAS SO ADORABLE.” Or “THE CUTEST EVER I’M DYING.” And now that I have read this, I too, can sympathize. This was monstrously precious. I am compelled to say this because of how cute. Check, Please! is a sweet little web comic that is finishing up later this year. It follows Eric “Bitty” Bittle, a former champion figure […]

Only Certain Hearts are Bears

My Boyfriend is a Bear by Pamela Ribon and Cat Farris

January 10, 2019 by GoAllieGo 5 Comments

In my family, we use the term “bear” to denote a particular kind of person. Not everyone is a bear, though it’s certainly not something to engender jealousy. A bear is born a bear. Bears are dear people, sensitive souls, kind humans bordering on empaths. Bears are loyal, if not perhaps a little clannish at times. Bears may seem fierce in their daily lives, intimidating to some due to their great-big hearts which drive their great-big goals. But underneath the teeth and fluff lies an […]

Chrono-Displaced Persons

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

January 9, 2019 by Tracy 1 Comment

I have never liked time travel. Episodes of science fiction TV that deal with it tend to give me a headache because I can’t wrap my mind around it and start thinking in circles. But I loved this book. It’s been around for a while and also had a movie based on it, but for those who don’t know, it’s about Henry and Clare. Henry is an involuntary time traveler; he has no control over where or when he travels, although it typically seems to […]

I liked this??????

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1) by Sarah J. Maas

January 9, 2019 by narfna 6 Comments

I was already poised to like this book, past feelings about Sarah J. Maas aside. It’s a Beauty and the Beast/Ballad of Tam Lin hybrid retelling, and unless you make some sort of grave mistake, you’ve already got the outline of the story ready to go (tried and true over hundreds of years and variations), and it’s pretty hard to mess that up. And she doesn’t! I thought the story worked well as a combo B&B/Tam-Lin/original elements mish-mash. The first half is mostly Beauty and the […]

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren

January 7, 2019 by baxlala 1 Comment

This was the last book I read in 2018, after a week and a half of sloth and gluttony and travel and ZERO READING because it turns out if I exhaust all of my introverted tendencies with an overabundance of alcohol and sugar and family and friend time (which I love!) because we’re only home a few times a year so we have to SQUEEZE IT ALL IN, I have no brainpower left to read. It’s quite sad, really. I still feel a bit like […]

…it never did any harm to walk through a new door now and then, and see where you end up.

Bellewhether by Susanna Kearsley

January 7, 2019 by Leedock 1 Comment

Happy 2019! I wanted to find a cozy historical romance/ Outlander-esque read for the holidays and this one did the trick.  This is definitely a “twinkle lights on, hot cup of tea, warm fleece blanket and PJs all day” approved title. Oh, and it’s Diana Gabaldon approved which is what put this on my radar to begin with. The novel is set in Long Island and bounces between present day and 1759. The historical plot line centers on the Wilde family amidst the French and […]
