I’d really like to give this 0 stars

The Matchmaker's List by Sonya Lalli

May 19, 2019 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

I’m the kind of reader who DNFs quickly and fairly frequently. I can usually tell by 50 pages in if I’m feeling it or not and don’t waste my time on things I’m going to regret reading. That I got 70% into this book and then rage quit is pretty unusual for me. I think I just wanted to love it so much that I couldn’t process how much I wasn’t enjoying the book until I couldn’t deny it any longer. The basic premise is […]

Two Cute Stories

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

May 12, 2019 by Manimama 5 Comments

I had read The Proposal last year when I got in in my Book of the Month Club. I enjoyed it, but it didn’t stick with me. I then read a Cannonballer’s review of The Wedding Date and thought I’d give it a try. The Wedding Date tells the story of Alexa, Chief of Staff to the Mayor of Berkeley, CA. She gets stuck in a hotel elevator when on her way to meet her sister and ends up spending time trapped with Drew. Drew is a […]

Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy reteam for a m/m romance 4 years after “Him.” But is it any good?

Top Secret by Sarina Bowen & Elle Kennedy

May 11, 2019 by ctkat1 3 Comments

Four years ago, authors Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy teamed up to write my absolutely favorite m/m romance, “Him” (and the follow up, “Us,” which is also very good but more a relationship novel than a romance novel). So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered they had written another one together and were doing a surprise-release this week. The story: Keaton (rich, popular, starts off straight…) has had the same girlfriend since he was 16; they’re now 21 and in college. For her […]

Cannonballing with an Alyssa Cole book I enjoyed very much.

An Unconditional Freedom (The Loyal League, #3) by Alyssa Cole

May 10, 2019 by narfna 12 Comments

I liked this! Almost without reservations! It feels so good to really like a book Alyssa Cole has written. I had some troubles with the first book in this series similar to the ones I’ve had with Reluctant Royals (character chemistry, mostly), but the second two have both been my favorite things by far that she’s written. I think maybe it’s because they’re such hardcore historical fiction, and with this one especially, the focus is almost equally split between historical detail, individual character arcs/growth, and […]

A pretty good follow up to Sorcerer to the Crown, even if I did predict everything.

The True Queen (Sorcerer Royal, #2) by Zen Cho

May 10, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

First of all, on the one hand this was a good follow up to Sorcerer to the Crown, which took pretty much everyone by surprise several years ago. It was like a little breath of fresh air, a light fantasy full of people of color in a setting people of color don’t normally inhabit in fiction (Regency England), taking on existing power structures and being all clever and wonderful. This book continues that tradition (this time with an emphasis on kindness and identity). At the […]

I don’t really know why I disliked this book about time-traveling bodyswaps in Tudor England.

Spark by Catherine Friend

May 10, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This book made me very cranky. In fact, I ended up disliking it so much I requested a refund from Amazon, which I guess they don’t normally do if you don’t like a book on Kindle. (They gave it to me, But just this once, because I’m such a loyal customer! Honestly, though, it was a $10 e-book and I did not tolerate it enough to permanently part with $10.) Honestly, I’m not sure how informative this review will end up being if you’re curios […]
