“You’re twenty-two, twenty-three, time is sort of infinite. It’s like a pool where you can’t touch the bottom.”

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

December 30, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

This was one of my favorite books of the year, so naturally I have waited until there is only one full day left in 2019 before writing my review. Evvie Drake is not going to be a five star book for everyone, but it hit so many of my buttons. I knew I was going to like it, but I don’t think I quite realized how much until I was already in it. Our main character is Eveleth “Evvie” Drake, whose husband dies on page […]

One of the very few cases where I like the plot better than the romance.

A Case of Possession (A Charm of Magpies, #2) by K.J. Charles

December 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

The first book did need a sequel, and this was a pretty good one! It addressed: the power imbalance between Stephen and Crane; the issue of their homosexuality and how it would affect them going forward if they were found out (Crane doesn’t care, but it would ruin Stephen’s life); the issue of Stephen’s newfound power, which comes from the relationship (coughcough) between Stephen and Crane, but which his colleagues presume is evidence of him becoming a warlock (a warlock is someone who drains life […]

I’m so disappointed in this book it almost makes me angry.

Royal Holiday (The Wedding Date, #4) by Jasmine Guillory

December 30, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

It pains me to give this two stars, but almost nothing about it worked for me. I’m upset about it. For multiple reasons. First to understand why I’m upset, here is the premise: The mother of the heroine from book three gets her own book. I really liked Vivian last book. The idea of a middle-aged romance is intriguing and refreshing. On top of that it is set in England, where the overworked mom is taking her first vacation in years, a mother/daughter trip spurred […]

Just some rambling thoughts about a book I love.

Prince's Gambit (Captive Prince, #2) by C.S. Pacat

December 30, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

I re-read this whole trilogy in October, but I only ended up writing a review for #2. Oh, well. I’m not going to be able to write a real review of this. It would just come out garbled with enthusiasm. Instead, I’m going to do a real spoilery bullet point thing and see what comes out. Absolutely do not read any further unless you’ve already read all three books. *If Laurent didn’t already know that Damen was Damianos, he would know by the end of […]

Trying desperately to get enough reviews for my double Cannonball

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews

White Hot by Ilona Andrews

Wildfire by Ilona Andrews

Diamond Fire by Ilona Andrews

December 27, 2019 by Malin 4 Comments

Sapphire Flames, book 4 in the series (novellas only count as half instalments) and the continuation of the series came out in August (on my birthday – thank you, House Andrews, for your benevolence!). In the months leading up to that release, I wanted to re-read the previous books, so everything was fresh in my mind. The plan was that my husband would read them too (how am I married to a man who just simply refuses to read the same things I like and […]

Discussing a beloved favourite in book club can be disheartening

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

December 27, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars Official book description: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway – a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. […]
