“But I can have spiders in my head as long as I don’t let them consume me.” #CBRBingo – Happy

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

September 8, 2020 by narfna 4 Comments

This was very sweet and I was extremely charmed by it. I didn’t end up giving it the fifth star, because shmoopsy mostly doesn’t work for me, and this did get a bit shmoopsy there at the end. (Shmoopsy is a technical term.) But overall, this was witty and so sweet and heartwarming, with a light undercurrent of dark humor. I loved the worldbuilding; the gentle bite of the satire combined so well with the big hearts of the main characters. Briefly (because I think […]

To Have and To Hoax by Martha Waters

September 4, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This is the author’s first novel, so I’m going to try to be nice… After reading half of the book, nevermind.   The main characters, Violet and James, married quickly, were wildly in love for a year, and then they had an argument that halted their happy marriage in its tracks.  The couple live in the same house, but they have a cold marriage where they try to avoid and ignore each other.  We haven’t learned what the argument was about a third of the […]

All the Ugly and Wonderful Things by Bryn Greenwood

September 4, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

This book may have been the one that caused me to take a looooong break between Cannonball Read posts. All the Ugly and Wonderful Things was named a Book of the Year by the Book of the Month Club, so I know people liked it. I just don’t know how comfortable I feel saying out loud that I loved this book. Well, there we go, I said it. This book has stuck with me since I read it four months ago. It is gritty, raw, […]

Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center

September 4, 2020 by randirock Leave a Comment

I will start this review by saying after I read this book, I expeditiously ordered every other book written by Katherine Center. I’ve said it before, and I will say it again – I love love. Give me a good romance, and I’m a happy girl. Not only was this book a beautifully written, heartfelt novel, it also featured some serious girl power, which I can always get behind! According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are 1.16 million firefighters in the United States, […]

Slippery Creatures (The Will Darling Adventures, #1) by K.J. Charles

September 2, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

I loved everything about this. K.J. Charles is honestly spoiling me for other historical romance authors. There’s just something about her style (very detailed, historically accurate, flawed but compelling characters) that gets me right in the pleasure center. She also doesn’t just write in one time period or keep it to straight-up romance. She’s always messing around with spy fiction or mystery or golden age pulp (here and Think of England) or jewelry heists or homages to Georgette Heyer regency fiction. Sometimes many of these […]

Two Rogues Make a Right (Seducing the Sedgwicks, #3) by Cat Sebastian

August 31, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for a plot- or angst- or action-heavy romance, this won’t satisfy you, but if you’re looking for something slow and sweet, where two lifelong friends slowly come together while one nurses the other back to health, than this is your book. Martin and Will have been best friends since childhood. Will grew up slightly neglected in a rather bohemian household that was falling into ruin. Martin’s father was a first class asshole, who also turned out to be an abuser (see the […]
