“There may come a time when a lass needs a lawyer”

March 23, 2014 by drmllz Leave a Comment

The Engagements is one of those books that jumps around in time, but instead of focusing on the secrets and passions of a single family or group of friends, it views the post-World War II era through the prism of a diamond ring, passed down through the decades not as an heirloom but by accident, coincidence and carelessness…and in one case crime. This ring unites different couples and families, serving as a symbol of both hope and disappointment, and providing a window on shifting concepts […]

Possession (Fallen Angels #5) by J.R. Ward – Paranormal Romance – Spoilers ahead! The conceit of the Fallen Angels series is that seven souls are at crossroads, heaven and hell are vying for each soul and whoever gets best of seven gets to take over the world. If you feel like Downton Abbey needs a splash of dystopia, you’re in luck!

March 17, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This was an interesting mix of courtship, kind of Jane Austen-ish society romance with a dystopian story that was a lot like The Hunger Games. There’s a complicated class system, mysterious but hunky suitor, and all kinds of secrets and lies. It sort of feels like a book that was written specifically to appeal to me. Well, me and the millions of other people who like those things. You can read my full review of Landry Park here.

Also, he’s totally a closeted lush.

This was adorable, and surprisingly insightful. Of course, I’m always susceptible to books that feature socially challenged individuals, especially ones that are male, so there was probably no way I wasn’t going to like this book. I’m glad to say that not only did I like it, I very very much liked it, and I can’t wait to see the movie version (also written by Simsion — actually, I believe the script came first, and then he wrote the novel). A lot of people have […]

“Although at the moment, I may be coming a bit unraveled.”

February 26, 2014 by narfna 11 Comments

Okay, guys, so this is a big step for me. I have never reviewed a straight up “bodice-ripper” romance novel* on CBR before, and I’ve only done a couple small reviews of them over on Goodreads. In fact, I usually don’t even mark them as ‘read’ over there because it has been a life-long habit for me to conceal my romance-reading from everyone. But this lovely review from Mrs. Julien finally gave me the excuse I needed. *Better known as historical romance. A large part of […]

Think “Brokeback Trojan War,” only BETTER

February 23, 2014 by HC 2 Comments

Maybe because I grew up in Christian private school, or because I’m just oblivious, or because Hollywood has succeeded in shaping my view of classical literature, I did not know until reading this book that many scholars agree that Achilles and Patroclus were not friends, or cousins, or brothers-in-arms, but lovers. Ooh la la! In fact, most of the time I was reading this book, I thought that the author, Madeline Miller, had taken a modern artistic liberty that was an interesting spin on the source material […]
