I’ll save you having to read this review: Just go watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries on YouTube. I mean it. GO!

August 20, 2014 by narfna 4 Comments

Okay, now when you’re done with that, come back and read this review. And then maybe get yourself a copy of The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet and snuggle up in your reading chair for a couple of hours. What this book is, basically, is an adaptation of a YouTube series, which is itself a modern day adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, told in interactive vlog-form (there are additional in-world videos, Tumblrs, and Twitter accounts, and if you watched live, you could interact with […]

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

ETA: My initial review stated one thing wrong: this is not the final book. THERE IS A FOURTH BOOK COMING NEXT YEAR OH MY GOD WHY ISN’T THIS SERIES OVER YET. I gotta be honest here. I went into this book fully expecting it to be awful. The cover appeals to me on a very basic level (the level that likes shiny and poofy things), but my experience with the last book left me convinced there was no way Cass could possibly write a third […]

The one where I think I’m glad I didn’t live in 16th century England…

August 13, 2014 by Lynn 1 Comment

The Queen’s Fool is one of those books that sat on my bookshelf for awhile, getting passed over time and again for something else. I don’t know if it was the cover (it does look a little romance-y) or the blurb on the back, but it never really jumped out and demanded to be read. Then one day, I found myself reaching for it, and I couldn’t put it down. Set during the tumultuous years after King Edward’s death in the sixteenth century, the novel […]

MelBivDevoe’s CBR review #13

August 6, 2014 by MelBivDevoe 1 Comment

I discovered Rainbow Rowell’s novels earlier this year, thanks to many recommendations from several friends.  Her latest, “Landline,” differs from her most recent novels in that it’s not YA.  Of all her novels, this one feels the most grown-up to me; it’s also the most supernatural or science fiction-ish. Georgie McCool is a successful television writer who has two young daughters with her stay-at-home husband Neal.  Georgie and Neal have been together since college, but their marriage has become strained as Georgie’s career has taken […]
