“You are a scheming, fiendish woman with entirely too much time at leisure.”

March 17, 2016 by crystalclear 6 Comments

After a long day, there’s nothing better than going home and absolutely devouring a romance novel in one sitting. Lucky for me, I had Tessa Dare’s Any Duchess Will Do sitting on top of my “to read” pile! This is a gem. There were a few times I had the giggles, and parts of it seemed fairly familiar… And unlike the last romance novel I read, there was a kidnapping this time! Said kidnapping occurs at the opening of the book. Griffin York, the Duke […]

… and Featuring the World’s Largest Plot Moppet

March 17, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 8 Comments

A follow-up to the new adult romance Him, Us follows up five months later with Ryan “Wes” Wesley and Jamie Canning. Living together in Toronto as Wes skates through a stellar NHL rookie season (doomed to failure and disappointment as the Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup since the year I was born) and Jamie is establishing his career as a coach. They don’t get to spend enough time together and when they do, the are constrained by the need to mask their relationship. Wes just […]

Fake relationship brilliance

March 14, 2016 by Jak 4 Comments

Was it Mrs. Julien who recommended a list of modern romance novels? I have failed to find the link, but whoever you are, thank for you recommending this book! (EDIT: it was Malin, thanks for the list, I have a queue at the library based on it!) It had everything I like: fake relationships, British humour, love rivals, and drama – quite literally, as a chunk of the action takes place on the stage in London’s West End. Elaine (Lainey) Graham is an actress, forced to […]

If she only had a spine

March 10, 2016 by Reba Leave a Comment

I was looking for a fun, light contemporary, and Hired Bride seemed just the thing. It had a quirky Southern matriarch, a dilapidated house – complete with taxidermy, and a marriage of convenience. I was all in. Deanna Beaufort works as a receptionist, barely making enough to get by and allow her sister to stay in college without working (although why that seems like a good idea is never explained). Despite having a long family history in Savannah, Georgia, which seems to indicate that they […]

The book that would never end.

March 8, 2016 by narfna 6 Comments

This book covers the adventures of the extended Fraser-McKenzie clan through the years 1772-1776, and oh God, you feel every one of them. I picked up this book in late August 2015. I just finished it last week. For those of you as bad at math as I am, that is NINE MONTHS. I coulda grown a whole baby in the time it took me to read this book. If I was a cat, maybe dozens of babies. A rabbit . . . at least a […]

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket

March 4, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

Every good fairy tale starts with a wish. The little mermaid wishes to walk on land. Cinderella wishes to go to the ball. Maleficent wishes someone would just throw her a fucking bone and invite her to a baby shower. And in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, all our hero wants is to get the girl. The other thing every good fairy tale needs is a quest. In this case, the quest is for the heart of Victoria Foster, the most beautiful girl in the village. Or […]
