My favorite Tessa Dare since Romancing the Duke.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Sometimes I just really need a ridiculous, historically inaccurate Tessa Dare book in my life. Disfigured Duke (from the war!) wants heir so he proposes marriage to the first convenient woman, the seamstress who was to have sewn his former fiancé’s wedding gown? Sign me up. A historically accurate version of this book would have been so depressing. Emma (a seamstress, formerly a disgraced vicar’s daughter) would have worked her fingers to the bone, losing her eyesight by the age of thirty and then descended […]

I really wish they had just *stayed* in Tuscany for the whole month…

December 18, 2017 by denesteak 3 Comments

I can’t remember the last time I read a book that is straight-up romance genre, but I’ve been meaning to try more since the CBR community always has such fun reviews of them. So when I saw this Kindle edition book going for $0.99 on Amazon, I imagined re-living Diane Lane’s sojourn in that Tuscan sun movie and bought it. It begins with Lizzy Harper, disgruntled housewife, being told at the last minute by her workaholic husband that he won’t be able to make their […]

Not that bad until the end

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Cinderella meets zombies.  There’s your synopsis in three words.  But for the most part, it’s a lot more than that. Exley doesn’t just stick zombies in your stereotypical Cinderella story.  She explains what the characters know about how the zombies (or vermin, or turned) came to be.  The story takes place in England during the aftermath of World War I.  While the shell shocked men are coming home from war, a devastating bout of ‘influenza’ sweeps the country, killing millions.  Only they don’t stay dead. […]

Christmas kissing book with up to THREE kisses #wowza

December 9, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

The day before Christmas Romily Parker confesses to her best friend, Charlie, that she loves him. Except it doesn’t go as planned. AT ALL. Instead of a romantic, glowing moment, there is only a low awkward silence. Romily runs out through the Birmingham Christmas market where she collides with a toy booth, spilling the toys everywhere and causing much embarrassment to herself UNTIL handsome stranger steps up to help. Handsome stranger then stalks her halfway across the market calls her beautiful and kisses her. And […]

This is me quitting this series.

November 30, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

Unless something changes and I hear the next book is great, I don’t think I will be reading any more books in this series, or by this author. Not for me. And this PAINS ME GREATLY. I love Superman. I love Lois & Clark. I love Lois Lane. I don’t know if the novelty has just worn off for me and her style has always been this way, or if I’ve changed, or if she really has lost steam, but I’m just not feeling this […]

Gimme the next one now, please!

November 29, 2017 by narfna 7 Comments

I read this book in one sitting. I was just so in the mood for a good romance novel, one that hit on the expected tropes but didn’t fall into the expected mistakes books in this genre often do. Clichéd experiences abound here, but the characters are round and fully realized, and their interactions feel real. It’s like the best of both worlds. Your id gets its pleasure quota filled, while your rational mind gets characters who act like adults and actually communicate with one […]
