Killer fog, murder, and sexytimes in Victorian London.

April 9, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

I liked this quite a bit, but I was able to put it down for several months, which doesn’t really speak super well of it’s ability to compel a reader. There was just something about the specific ways the pacing and the characters and the plot combined that I liked, but didn’t love. So this is a romance novel, but it’s also a hybrid Victorian/mystery/thriller-ish sort of book, and all of the plots are not resolved (though the romance aspect is), and I’m assuming they […]

Another book that felt super 80s to me

April 8, 2018 by llp 2 Comments

On a recent work trip, I was reading Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie, and it was heavy. There’s a lot going on in my life, and that book was too much for me to handle in a hotel room on my own, so ducked into a library to find something a bit frothy. I immediately came across Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. I am absolutely excited to see the forthcoming movie (mostly because of that amazing cast and because let’s see something different), but […]

Drama, on and off stage, and getting knickers in a twist in real life

April 4, 2018 by Dome'Loki 3 Comments

Raina Telgemeier is amazing and I wish she had been writing when I was a tween.  As it is, I’m happy to be able to give these books to my daughters and enjoy the nostalgia they bring me.  Her first two graphic novels are autobiographical, Smile and  Sisters.  This time around she drew from her life experiences of middle school and doing theater to create an original work titled Drama, and it has lived up to it’s name.  In 2015 Drama had the honor of being on the “Most frequently […]

The baddest bitch of them all

April 3, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

I didn’t love the final book in the Call of Crows series quite as much as I liked the first two. That kind of surprised me because Erin Amsel, who this book focuses on, is a favorite character in the other installments. I still liked her and thought the book was worth reading, it just didn’t have the same pull on me. Perhaps that’s because this book deviates from the first books and I found their sojourn through the various other worlds somewhat uninteresting. There […]

Books, cults, and rage

April 3, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

I enjoyed the first book in this series enough to immediately get the second book. Luckily my library had a copy. Libraries ftw! I’m happy to say that I enjoyed The Undoing even more than The Unleashing. The plot was just a bit tighter and the ending, while still pretty open, felt like it had more emotional closure. This book centers on Jace Berisha. She’s been a Crow for a few years, ever since her husband successfully killed her. After an upbringing in a cult […]

Best case zombies

3.5 stars. This book was a complete surprise and a total delight. Gobbled it up in one day because it was basically literary candy. Like, really well made gourmet level candy. I think it was recommended on a Book Riot podcast a while back and I thought, ooh, that sounds interesting. It was perfect timing for it to come up in my library holds for the weekend. Kera Watson is a tough lady. She served in Afghanistan in the Marines and now being back in […]
