Get it together, Fitz

June 23, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Fool’s Quest is the second book in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, having left Fool’s Assassin with Bee (and Shun) having been kidnapped by the Servants and a group of Chalcedean mercenaries. Here we catch up with Fitz….not hot on their heels, as he’s instead consumed by caring for the Fool, who’s been returned to him a broken man but one intent on having Fitz wreak vengeance upon those who harmed him. The Witmaster is on at Fitz to take a new partner, and […]

Fitz is a fool

June 19, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

I don’t often read 600 pages in a day, but when I do I’m sat by a pool in 85 degree heat and it’s a book starring FitzChivalry Farseer. An incredibly welcome return to the world of Fitz and the Fool (how I’ve missed them!) sees us catch up with Fitz – now Tom Badgerlock – decades after their last outings. Now in his sixties, even if he looks half that thanks to the super skill healing he received last time around, Tom has settled […]

I never thought I’d say this about a Robin Hobb book, but…

May 20, 2017 by TheShitWizard 3 Comments

Renegade’s Magic is the final, extremely disappointing book in Robin Hobb’s Soldier Son trilogy. It’s so wildly disappointing that it’s made me look back at its predecessors, which I had really enjoyed, and wonder if they were actually anywhere near as good as I’d thought they were. (Mild spoilers below)… Forest Mage left us with Nevare having finally cut all ties to his Gernian life. With the population of Gettys reeling in disgust at the crimes he’s accused of, Nevare uses his Speck magic to […]

Where I spend all of my time yelling at fictional characters

May 15, 2017 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

Shaman’s Crossing, the first in Robin Hobb’s Soldier Son trilogy, left us with Nevare having survived the Speck plague outbreak at the Academy and looking forward to getting his life back on track, blissfully unaware that, as a character in a Robin Hobb book, being bullied and surviving the plague is the least of his troubles. Forest Mage takes all of Nevare’s hopes, dreams, loved ones and the life he’s been building and torches them all, dragging him down to a bottomless pit of despair […]

Robin Hobb never fails to deliver

May 10, 2017 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

For some reason, I’d been putting off reading Robin Hobb’s Soldier Son trilogy. Partly, I think, because it hadn’t received the wholly glowing reviews of her other works on Goodreads, and partly because I’d been so sucked in to the worlds of Fitz and the Fool and the Elderlings, and didn’t think that stories set elsewhere would satisfy me. It wasn’t until I was bemoaning the fact that I still hadn’t got my hands on the latest Fitz trilogy that I decided to give The […]

Too long, too slow, and Fitz is a butt.

Things I did not expect: 1. That koalas, cute though they may be, are actually incredibly gross animals who basically feed their babies poo, and who are so dumb they can’t even recognize a eucalyptus leaf when it’s removed from a branch and offered to them. 2. The Spanish Inquisition. 3. To three-star most of this series. This is one of those series (and authors) people have been recommending to me for yearrrrs now. And many of them have done so while telling me it’s […]
