The Wheel (spinning) of Time

The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan

November 7, 2025 by Uncoolaidman Leave a Comment

Book four of The Wheel of Time is where I began to have some doubts about finishing this series. I knew going in that I was setting myself up to real fourteen books, which is more than I have done for any other series. Though I found the first book, The Eye of the World, to be derivative (of Lord of the Rings and Arthurian legend in particular) at times I enjoyed the story and characters enough to continue on. The second novel, The Great […]

I’m tugging my braid as I write this review

The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan

I am still slowly progressing through The Wheel of Time series. I started collecting the books a few years back every time that I found one for cheap in a used bookstore. I read the first two books, and enjoyed them. The first felt very derivative of Lord of the Rings, among other things, particularly in the naming of characters. Perrin, the loyal friend of the main protagonist, always makes me think of Peregrin Took from LoTR. The main antagonist, Ba’alzamon (Ba’al Zebub) and his […]

I have been listening to The Wheel of Time for four solid months. That’s how long it takes to get through this behemoth. Over 400 hours of audio, seriously. So, yes, a commitment and a challenge. Worth it? I’m gonna go with ABSOLUTELY. This was not my first time trying to tackle The Masterpiece. I’ve read Eye of the World probably five times, and the furthest I’d gotten in the series was into the sixth book, but fatigue/ADHD/life got in the way of my previous […]

“Whatever comes, face it on your feet.”

The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

June 7, 2022 by Halbs 1 Comment

Earlier this year I read book one in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series – The Eye of the World. I gave it the ol’ five star treatment because I just enjoyed the heck out of it. While I fully intended to read one of these books every year and finish in my 50s, that didn’t happen. Instead, I waited only two months before starting book two – The Great Hunt. I enjoyed this book even more than the first! All of the origin story […]

“The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills.”

The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

Even though I’m a big ol’ nerd, I have never been interested in The Wheel of Time series until recently. The new Wheel of Time show on Amazon Prime did it (all hail Rosamund Pike). My family watched it together, and once season one ended I picked up the first book of the very long series. So, I’m coming at this review from the show first and then the books. My review of the show is that it’s not for me. I’m not really sure […]

Wheel of Time – much different than the show

Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

January 18, 2022 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

While I have been aware of the Wheel of Time series since the 90s, I avoided reading it as I had my fill of Tolkein wannabe stories growing up and had been generally avoiding them since then. With the series premiering on Amazon Prime, my teenager had started reading them and had been pressing me to read them but I resisted. After watching the first season, which I enjoyed greatly, I decided to give the books a shot and I am glad I did. Reading […]
