As They Say, When in Rome. . . No, Wait, Actually Don’t

I, Claudius by Robert Graves

November 3, 2023 by elderberrywine 2 Comments

cbr15 bingo Sex cbr15 passport Rome   You know what would have really helped me make sense of all this would have been a family tree.  This was worse than Russian novels, where everyone has at least four names and a nickname.  But these guys changed names whenever they felt like it, used a limited set to choose from (Nero?  Oh, not THAT Nero), divorced and hooked up depending on the politics of the moment, and let’s not even get into the suicides, forced and […]

Troy by Stephen Fry

Paris Dallencourt Is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall

Here is the first batch of “did not finish” for CBR 15. Troy by Stephen Fry The audio book was 11 hours. Listened to about half of it. Skipped quite a bit. Still didn’t finish it. I read Mythos and thought that the audiobook version of Troy would be easier to digest. It was not. Greek Myths by Robert Graves This is basically an encyclopedia of Greek myths. Maybe you can use this as some sort of reference material. But I could not get through […]

Claudius the God

Claudius the God by Robert Graves

September 30, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

It took a little while into this second volume of Robert Graves’s historical novel about the life and reign of emperor Claudius (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus), who becomes emperor at the very end of the first volume, much to his chagrin. It’s clear at the end when we get some source material added in the kinds of sources Graves used for his novel, in which sections are partially lifted. One example is a speech Claudius gives in which in the middle of his argument, […]

The Big Book of Reel Murders – Edited by Otto Penzler – 4/5 The concept of this collection is still mostly pulpy stories (though with some other older stories and more contemporary stories not really pulpy) that were made into films. It should really be called “Reel Crimes” as not every story involves a murder, but the concept mostly works. It ends up being a little frayed throughout as apparently it’s just much easier to get some rights to stories than others, so like the […]

I Claudius

I, Claudius by Robert Graves

April 11, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Poor poor pitiful me! Claudius is a kind of nephew to Caesar Augustus and born outside of Italy, but regardless, he’s still among the court, and eventually, as we know, will become emperor after Caligula. Claudius is also afflicted with a stammer and a limp, which both allows him to hide behind his two infirmities, but also forces him to the side of things. His stammer also causes most people in his life to believe he is not very smart. We know of course, from […]

As the Romans do

I, Claudius by Robert Graves

December 9, 2021 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I love historical fiction, it’s my thing and this often gets touted as the first “modern” historical novel, so I of course was very curious. Started this last year in English, but intelligently put the book in the storage room with the rest of my on-hold life, found it in one of the free book cases in German though and finished it. Except, as I’ve learned while looking for pics for this review, I most likely read the condensed German translation that includes Claudius The […]
