Yes, dear ones, the book was indeed better. (CBR10 Bingo)

The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike #2) by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling, pseudonym), Robert Glenister (narrator)

*Note: This review was completed in 2018 before the author’s views towards our trans siblings began to be widely known.  My reading experience was what it was and these reviews will remain up, but it should be noted that I find her TERF values abhorrent, which have only become more clear over time, and her doubling down in Summer 2020 has made the decision to walk away from her as a creative force the only acceptable choice for me. I will no longer be supporting […]

Revisiting Cormoran and Robin (CBR10Bingo)

The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike #1) by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling pseudonym), Robert Glenister (narrator)

The audiobooks really do make this series better.

This review is mostly going to be me responding to some of my own thoughts from my first review, with some extras thrown in; for example, how I was considering raising this to five stars because I loved Robert Glenister’s narration so much. I love the dead tree versions of this book, but the audio adds another level. Highly recommend if you are so inclined. (I’m leaving my rating at 4.5, rounding down, for now, because of the ending. See below.) Spoilery discussion of several […]

Liked it even more this time!

March 2, 2018 by narfna 6 Comments

Okay, so now having finished my first re-read of this book, I am so tempted to up the rating to five stars. A large portion of that desire comes from listening to the audio this time around. There’s something really satisfying about Robert Glenister’s voice narrating this story; it most definitely increased my enjoyment. Another part is that this just feels like the ideal murder mystery to me right now. It was exactly what I was craving, plus some. I love all the clues and […]

Cormoran “Strikes” Again – See what I did there?

January 9, 2018 by Rachie3879 4 Comments

I love visits with my in-laws. For one they’re just generally great people (I am very lucky in that regard); they also live far enough away that they don’t get to see my daughter in person more than a couple times a year. So, while we visit, my husband and I just let them handle almost everything and we get to actually sit back and relax and read a few books. This is how only two weeks into 2018 I have finished three books. Don’t […]

Second time through, the characters make this just as good.

August 22, 2017 by narfna 5 Comments

The thing about entirely plot-based books is that they don’t usually make for good re-reads, and I am a TOTAL book re-reader. “Do I want to re-read this someday?” is genuinely a question I ask before I will elevate a book to the four star level. If the answer is no, then there better be some damn fine extenuating circumstances as to why not (for instance a book that’s really good, but so traumatizing and upsetting that you can’t read it more than once). Mysteries sometimes […]
