A Satisfying Sc-Fi Read

Mysterium by Robert Charles Wilson

September 25, 2023 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

CBR15Bingo: You Are Here (The characters have no clue where they are and have to figure it out.) Every year or so I pick up a used Robert Charles Wilson novel and spend an enjoyable time reading it. It’s almost always a satisfying read and I feel contented by the mystery being solved. He tends to do a good job of presenting an interesting sci-fi idea and then wrapping things up in a neat bow or a little twist. This one dealt with inter-dimensional travel […]

Competent, Readable Science Fiction

Darwinia by Robert Charles Wilson

February 12, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

Robert Charles Wilson writes enjoyable, twisty sc-fi and Darwinia fits into his usual pattern of work. It’s a straight forward book that I know I’ve read before, but I had no memory of any of the twists or the plot. I guess that’s part of my general sense of okayness with the book — it’s not groundbreaking or revelatory, but it is competent and fun, and not everything is going to be Ursula K LeGuin. You’ll probably like it but won’t remember it in a year. I […]

The Stars Are Out Tonight

February 4, 2017 by Julie Leave a Comment

Tor.com has a book club where you can download a free ebook every month and this book was one of their selections last year.  Even though I grew up reading a lot of classic science fiction, I am sometimes wary of it because it isn’t necessarily that compelling.  For instance, reading something like the Foundation books by Asimov, where it’s a lot of ideas hitting you left and right but no characters to really anchor the story.  While Spin has its roots in that sort […]

“Compared to geology, we barely exist.”

April 8, 2014 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

I really enjoyed this novel, a character-driven SciFi story about Earth in the aftermath of its sudden enclosure within what became known as the Spin membrane. Inside the membrane, on Earth, time progresses as normal, while outside the membrane time advances as relativistic speeds — billions of years pass by in space over the span of a couple of decades on earth. Our protagonist is Tyler Dupree, close childhood friend to siblings Jason and Diane Lawton. One night, the three are outside stargazing, when the […]
