Hero Poetry

Queer and Fearless: Poems Celebrating the Lives Of LGBTQ+ Heroes by Rob Sanders

April 18, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Since April is Poetry Month and Queer and Fearless: Poems Celebrating the Lives Of LGBTQ+ Heroes is due mid-April I felt this was as good as any time to read and review this Rob Sanders book. The idea is of course, Heroes of the Movement. We see the men and women that started the pathway for others. There are names you’ll probably know, such as Marsha P. Johnson and Harvey Milk, but a few were new to me and possibly to you as well (or […]

And I thought my new quilt was bada$$

Stitch by Stitch: Cleve Jones and the AIDS Memorial Quilt by Rob Sanders

January 6, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even though Stitch by Stitch: Cleve Jones and the AIDS Memorial Quilt came out in 2021, I found a copy online. And because of that, I was unable to read all the extras at the end as it was too small to read (darn my old eyes an no zoom features). But that just means I will have to get a copy for myself, for several friends and at least two libraries, as I know there is more than I was able to get! Stitch […]

And you thought your mom was cool

The Mother of a Movement: Jeanne Manford: Ally, Activist, and Co-Found of PFLAG by Rob Sanders

September 16, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We all should probably have a mother like Jeanne Manford. She was a mother of all mothers by doing what she could do for her children. And when one of them came out as gay during a less understanding time to say the least, she could have disowned him, or told him he was a sinner or worse. She could have done nothing, but instead she said Yes, I will stand up for you and write a letter so the world can see how proud […]

The Man: Mayor Pete BEFORE he was Mayor

Mayor Pete: The Story of Pete Buttigieg by Rob Sanders

March 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mayor Pete: The Story of Pete Buttigieg will need to be updated by the time this comes out in July. The book ends on him being a Presidential Candidate. Otherwise, Rob Sanders wrote a fun introduction to the man few know about before that candidacy was announced. A hint of classic illustrations with a modern feel to go along with it is what you will see with Levi Hastings illustrations. It looks like something you would see from the late 1960s or 1970s. Yet, the […]

Protest yourself into a good read

June 27, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is more of a 4.5 than a 4. I like it. The art is really “nifty” and cool. The story has been done before. However, it is done slightly different than usual as well. I am not sure it is really meant for kids (or if it is, at least 5 and up). It really is a more adult take on the subject.   The book itself is basic: With very simple text it talks about how instead of doing some of the violent […]

The Rainbow Flag

May 9, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I know I need a longer review then saying, “Book good. Read!” But that is what it boils down to.  Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag by Rob Sanders and illustrated by Steven Salerno, is just that: a good book that you should read. The description from Amazon about this book says, “deeply moving and empowering true story.”  However, I am not sure those are the words I would have used. While it is those things, it is also just a […]
