“It’s not your job to fold yourself up so small that your edges never bump into anyone else. What kind of life is that?”

The Holiday Trap by Roan Parrish

December 28, 2022 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Very early in 2022 I found a couple of holiday romances to place on this year’s to read list for reading during the holiday season as I wind down my reading year. Roan Parrish’s The Holiday Trap was one that found its way on that list by virtue of its place on Buzzfeed’s Most Anticipated LGBTQ Romances of 2022 list and that I had been meaning to pick up a Parrish book anyway. Honestly, the premise of The Holiday but queer was likely going to […]

a more successful out of season christmas read

The Lights on Knockbridge Lane by Roan Parrish

My first thought: the nerdy one went to Caltech!!! As should all super nerdy book characters, it only makes sense. So funny that I find it fun when Caltech (my alma mater) is referenced in literature/shows/movies but in reality I had a miserable time there and wouldn’t encourage anyone to go! MOVING ON. I definitely picked this book up, way out of season, after a NYT article about the trend of mainstream LGBTQ romance novels. This one, in particular, is by a Harlequin imprint that […]

The Lights on Knockbridge Lane

“Feeling cozy and loved and together is more important than scientific truth.”

The Lights on Knockbridge Lane by Roan Parrish

It’s another Garnet Run book! Like the previous books, there’s loads of pets in this one, but they’re not as cuddly as cats and dogs… This book is about family – the ones you choose to make, and how you can keep choosing them. While this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a standalone without any issue. “Adam’s mission was clear: In order to convince his daughter that they could still have a wonderful Christmas despite leaving Mason, their home, […]

Best Laid Plans

Lower animal content, higher angst for this sequel

Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish

April 10, 2021 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I was intensely curious about Jack’s brother Charlie after reading Better Than People, so I was very pleased to see that this book would be about him. Alas, the animal content of this book isn’t quite as high as the previous one in the series – only two cats. But gosh, Jane and Marmot are pretty amazing cats. When Rye inherits a house from a grandfather he never met, it seems too good to be true. But given he’s been couchsurfing in Seattle, he makes […]

Soft and angsty romance

Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish

February 13, 2021 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

There are three thing I know about a Roan Parrish book before I open it. It will be queerly m/m. It will be rich in emotion. The two main characters will be messes who make each other better people. My only consistent critique of her work is that I wish her characters went to therapy more often. In real life, I would insist on it, but in fiction I can sink into their emotional lives and become mushy with them. Rye Jannsen is at the […]

“There’s Hope Left in These Dusty Chords”

Raze by Roan Parrish

May 14, 2019 by Emmalita 1 Comment

Raze is the third book in Roan Parrish’s Riven series. I have not read the first two, but when I saw Raze offered on NetGalley I remembered ctkat1’s very positive review and decided to request it anyway. I’m glad I did. Raze is out July 2. This was in many ways a sweet book to read. There are times when I need a heavy dose of emotional angst in my falling in love story. Raze had some good angst. Felix and Huey are both messes who […]
