I have been reading an awful lot of YA fiction lately – partly out of interest, and partly out of reading to my son. I figure I better read to him while he is willing to listen, and Santa brought him the Percy Jackson box set for Christmas. I have recently lost him at story time to his father and Harry Potter, and I confess I am tempted to read ahead and see where the book series goes. I can only be patient for so […]
Percy Jackson is missing, but here’s a new bunch of demi-god teens to hang out with instead
Jason has amnesia. He wakes up on a school bus on the way to the Grand Canyon with what appears to be his very confused girlfriend (Piper) and a bemused, slightly disbelieving best friend (Leo) who both seem very surprised that he can’t remember spending the last few months together at the “Wilderness School”, a boarding school for juvenile delinquents. Not that the field trip to the Canyon makes things better. One of the other school kids sprouts wings, and tries to kill Jason and […]
So a Cyclops and a Satyr Walk Into a Cave…
This was a book I finished a couple weeks ago, and when I sat down to finally write the review…I couldn’t remember anything that happened in the book! It took me trying to remember the ending, and then working backwards to piece together the rest of the story. Now, this could be my head cold of doom talking, but I think it just means the book wasn’t that memorable. It wasn’t bad, but any means, just not something that stuck with me.
Gods and Monster Potential
For Christmas this year I got my 8 year old nephew the Percy Jackson books. I’ve seen trailers for the movies and heard a little bit about the books to figure he’s about the right age for them (and is already reading the first Harry Potter one.) He was happy and went on his merry way. Then a couple weeks ago, my husband is cleaning out stuff in the basement and finds the first book down there! I figure, well, might as well read it […]
The last Percy Jackson book? Who knows.
This is what I wrote upon finishing the book last month: “My emotions have been played like a cheap fiddle at a hoedown AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE. I like, am alllllmost tempted to give this five stars, but I’m gonna sit on that impulse for now (see cheap fiddle hoedown comment above.) So for now, 4.5 stars. Also shut up, YOU’RE CRYING.” I’ve cooled off since then, and I’d probably need to re-read before I can form definite opinions about specific details (mostly because […]
Breaking Down the Doors of Death
If you like a good cliff-hanger, then Rick Riordan is the author for you. In fact, the dedication of The House of Hades reads, “To my wonderful readers: Sorry about that last cliff-hanger. Well, no, not really. HAHAHAHA. But seriously, I love you guys.” The House of Hades, the fourth book in The Heroes of Olympus series, picks up right where the third book, The Mark of Athena, leaves us hanging, with Percy and Annabeth stuck in Tartarus trying to get to the Doors of […]
