An Absolute Page-Turner of a Mystery

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

March 4, 2022 by krisbholland 1 Comment

After several rave reviews and a feverish few weeks waiting for my copy from the library, it turns out everyone was right. Thursday Murder Club is fantastic! Set in the picturesque fictional village of Coopers Chase near Kent in the Southeast of England. Coopers Chase is the home of an upscale retirement community which is, of course, packed with eccentric characters. The cast includes Joyce (a retired nurse), Ibrahim (a psychiatrist in a former life), Ron (a union organizer) and Elizabeth (a woman whose past is […]

This book brought such unexpected joy into my life :)

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

Look who has fallen behind in her reviews again. Big surprise, right? But I’ve been reading so much, and such great books that I can’t really complain.  This was the last book I read in January, and it just brought sunshine into my life. I did not pick this book up on purpose. I’d seen it in Waterstones all throughout last year, and it never really caught my attention. But I was browsing my library for immediately available audiobooks, and I recognized that one and […]

“After a certain age, you can pretty much do whatever takes your fancy. No one tells you off, except for your doctors and your children.”

In one word: Charming Once again, the recommendations of the Cannonball Read community came in with a flawless pick that I absolutely adored. I believe it was at the last CBR Zoom meet-up that this book was mentioned. I know by now if more than two or more cannonballers chime in with YES YES THAT’S A GOOD ONE about a book that I should just go ahead and bump it up to the top of my list. (Three cheers for internet friends who though you […]

Cozy and Enjoyable

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

February 15, 2022 by Ellesfena 6 Comments

The Thursday Murder Club is a murder mystery (sort of a cozy?) that takes place in a retirement community. If you’re looking for a perfectly enjoyable mystery that’s never scary but has more depth than a cozy and will also make you laugh, this might be a good choice. The four main characters, Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, and Ron enjoy solving old murders in their spare time, but when a developer is murdered in their community, they decide to help the police (whether the police like it […]

I love this series so much.

The Man Who Died Twice (Thursday Murder Club, #2) by Richard Osman

I don’t even want to talk about it. I kind of want to read both books in the series again right now. They’re just the perfect mix of humor, pathos, mystery, cleverness, impishness, and intrigue. I continue to be so, so impressed by the way that Osman mixes these various elements together so well, so that one moment you’re laughing, one minute you’re puzzling out the mystery elements, and another you’re extremely sad because these character so perfectly represent the tragedy of being human, which […]

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

October 3, 2021 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

I bought Richard Osman’s first novel, The Thursday Murder Club, mainly out of curiosity. I enjoy Osman’s television persona on various UK panel shows and as the co-host of Pointless and the host of House of Games and I thought that his intellectual brand of humor might make his book a diverting read. The massive sales figures and rave reviews clued me in that The Thursday Murder Club might rise above the typical level of “TV star turns their hand to writing fiction” output, but […]
