“I’m afraid I don’t know WTF. I only discovered LOL from Joyce last week” (Double Bingo)

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

November 2, 2025 by Malin 3 Comments

CBR17 Bingo: White (a book with a white cover) In a charming retirement village somewhere in the south of England, four elderly individuals solve cold cases for fun. Retired nurse, Joyce, is the last to be inducted into “The Thursday Murder Club”, as they are in need of some of her medical expertise in trying to solve their most recent case. Led by the formidable Elizabeth, who used to be a spy, aided and abetted by Ibrahim, a retired psychologist and Ron, a former trade union […]

“After a certain age, you can pretty much do whatever takes your fancy. No one tells you off, except for your doctors and your children.”

The Thursday Murder Club: a novel by Richard Osman

I read this book after seeing the movie so I pretty much knew how the plot was going to go, yet I was pleasantly surprised that the book and the movie are not 100% the same. Set at the idyllic retirement home of Coopers Chase (seriously, when I get old enough to retire find me a place like this), the Thursday Murder Club gathers to solve cold cases, mostly for their own enjoyment, and because none of them can really not be a bit busy-body. […]

I Do Love These Characters

The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

October 29, 2025 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Fans of the Thursday Murder Club series. In a nutshell: Nick has found a bomb under his car. At Joyce’s daughter’s wedding, he talks to Elizabeth to ask for help. The next day, Nick is missing, and his business partner is a possible suspect. In other news, Ron’s daughter has kicked out her abusive husband, who happens to also be a less than model citizen in other ways. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I have enjoyed all the books in the […]

Unlucky Coins

The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

October 9, 2025 by jeverett15 1 Comment

The fifth entry in the Thursday Murder Club series takes place at some remove from the prior novel. It’s been long enough for Joyce’s perpetually single daughter Joanna to meet a man named Paul, fall in love with him, and get married. It has not quite been long enough for former spy and (spoiler alert for the fourth novel) recent widow Elizabeth to get back to her old self. At Joanna’s wedding, a large-small affair that nearly breaks the always fragile bond between mother and […]

Takes a “Characters Welcome” first approach

The Impossible Fortune by Richard Osman

October 5, 2025 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: White It’s been about a year since the events of the last Thursday Murder Club novel, and it has been quiet as characters are dealing with grief and changing circumstances. But when the best man at Joyce’s daughter’s wedding approaches Elizabeth during the reception to ask for help, it is enough to kick-start the events of the novel and get the gang back together to investigate a potential murder or kidnapping. There are also a few other loose threads from previous books that […]

Good title, nice premise, lots of characters. . . but something didn’t quite click for me

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

I’ve had The Thursday Murder Club on my list for awhile now and finally happened to be in the library at the same time this novel was on the shelf! I snagged it, and the book waited patiently on my end table for a week or two until its turn came around to be devoured and loved. Turns out, I probably read too many glowing reviews because I found it to be kind of just. . .pleasant? And I struggled to figure out why I […]
