Warmth in its forms

What You Need to Be Warm by Neil Gaiman

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am just going to say that this awesome book of poems was created by Neil Gaiman. They called it, What You Need to Be Warm. And they had a long list of illustrators, some I knew and others were new to me. And then I will say it is about refugees and other displaced people and what images, things, places or people that made them feel warm. And then just gush that this is both the best and worst thing I have read this […]

Wondering Around by Meg Fleming

April 25, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story of Wondering Around by Meg Fleming was so-so for me. There is nothing wrong with it, but I was not “grabbed” by it. The story is simple, you travel around nature seeing and being curious. And when you do this, you will find how little things can connect with one big thing, making it something wonderful and grand. It is the illustrations of Richard Jones that I really liked. They are bold and soft. Brash and calm. They are colorful and well, they […]

Because I found two new books, I’m writing a three book review

Paper Planes by Jim Helmore

In a Jar by Deborah Marcero

Out of a Jar by Deborah Marcero

February 10, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Several of the books I have read deal with a friend moving a serious distance. And Paper Planes starts off as that kind of story. And like In a Jar by Deborah Marcero the solution is a lot simpler than our child narrators feel is possible. In Paper Planes by Jim Helmore, Mia and Ben are best friends who do everything together. And while they like watching the geese fly, and swinging together, they love making airplanes and hope someday to make one that will […]

Why sing ONE song when you can sing four?

The Blue Songbird by  Vern Kousky

Bird Watch by Christie Matheson

Bird Builds a Nest: A First Science Storybook by Martin Jenkins

Warbler Wave by April Pulley Sayre

March 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even though the weather has other plans, the calendar is saying that Spring is around the corner. Therefore, the Spring/Easter displays are in full bloom. And on said display for children’s books at work, we have several bird books. Therefore, a lovely theme of birds grace the below reviews. The first book I want to mention is The Blue Songbird by Vern Kousky is a sweet book about finding your “personal song”, it is obvious this story has been done before (cue: Happy Feet I and II). However, […]

Stuck in the Middle with …. Wednesday

June 21, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There is nothing wrong with this book. It is a nice “little read” yet, it really did nothing for me. The illustrations do have a soft tone to them that makes it pleasant to read as well as to look at. But Whale in a Fishbowl by Troy Howell has something that I am not a huge fan of and that is it is a tad bit too poetic.   Which is a funny thing as I love poetry and I enjoy poetic. However, when […]
