Nursery Rhymes and Shakin’ your Groove thang!

Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Say Good Night by Tiger Tales

Babies Around the World: Dancing by Tamara Barker

April 19, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few months ago, a friend had her third Munchkin. I have known Mama Munchkin since the day before she turned two. And in that time, there were several tea sets, playing dolls and superheroes, a talk-the-babysitter (me)-into-getting-in-the-canoe-and-actually-go-down-the-stream with (then just) Munchkin, her brothers, and a cousin, birthday parties, and of course books, that we shared. Therefore, it was natural for me to give books as a baby gift. One of the books I found for Munchkin the Third was Dinosaur, Dinosaur, Say Good Night. […]

Round the Seasons we go

Sing a Season Song by Jane Yolen

March 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sing a Season Song is a sweet poem that is a “twofer” book. First, you get the book (or the story). This is one large, lovely poem poem. And second, you get the stanza of the page, or what I felt was a solo poem. Jane Yolen knows how to twist a phrase or ten. And with this book with the outrageously gorgeous and sweet illustrations by Lisa Ashlock, proves it. There are details galore. Each page is super busy, and you have to look […]

When your cookies get spooky

Cookie Boo by Ruth Paul

December 31, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cookie Boo by Ruth Paul was sitting on my desk in the to-be-filed with other reader copies of the picture book persuasion. I saw the shiny Halloween themed cover and knew I had to find what was inside. Due out in July 2020, this Halloween book is going to be a big treat with the little monsters in your life. The rhyming text and the fun, bright illustrations grab you from the first page. Howl along with a gang of cookies out and about on […]

Go Sports Ball!

Home Run, Touchdown, Basket, Goal!: Sports Poems for Little Athletes  by  Leo Landry

April 16, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have done my auntly duty flattening my tail-feathers on benches and bleachers, gotten eye and neck strain from trying to see a 9-year-old out in right field, been rained on, sunburned and eaten alive by a mosquito or two watching nephews playing sports. And while I can tell the difference between a puck and the goalie (usually) and which football Americans vs. Europeans are talking about, I am not a sports person.  However, the other day, one of the publishes sent me a large, […]

The Worlds of David Ezra Stein

Hush, Little Bunny by David Ezra Stein

Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise by David Ezra Stein

February 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hush, Little Bunny is a cute reimagining of Hush Little Baby and Guess How Much I Love You, stories. David Ezra Stein has taken this sweet lullaby and updated it slightly. What you loved is there, the rhyming and the “Papa will give you” lines. And the love the parent rabbit gives to the baby rabbit is just as touching. There are just a few newer elements such Papa will growl at bunnies who do not play fair. But overall, there is nothing new. What […]

“Five silly ghosts floating by a gate. The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late.”

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Five silly ghosts floating by a gate. The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late.”   But it is not too late for you to pick up Five Silly Ghosts for your special witch, ghost, pirate, alien, princess, or goblin! Five Silly Ghosts is a little board book with the same “five little ghost” story (counting, rhyming and having fun) that we have seen before. There is nothing new for the person who knows this rhyme. However, it is still great for the toddler […]
