I read a lot of picture books so I have a lot of reviews. This is one of them.

All About Cats Fantastically Funny Rhymes by Frantz Wittkamp

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you like offbeat rhyming books, All About Cats Fantastically Funny Rhymes might be for you. The crew of Frantz Wittkamp, Axel Scheffler and David Henry Wilson made this due in mid-March 2024 picture book.  I am not sure how the final result will be as I found it as an online reader copy, but it is supposed to be paper and not a traditional first published as hardcover edition. I am not sure how much I liked all the approximately fifteen poems about cats […]

Yaaas, Queen!

If You’re a Drag Queen and You Know It by Lil Miss Hot Mess

The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish by Lil Miss Hot Mess

April 19, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I saw a Facebook (or Instagram, it was late, I wasn’t paying attention where I was) post from the publisher of If You’re a Drag Queen and You Know It. I said, “That looks familiar.” I screenshot and then passed out. The following morning, I went to work to look up the book. Yes, it looked familiar because I had recognized the blue haired/bearded Queen from The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish.  As Hips is read to the tune of The […]

For those who question and have big feelings

Aaron Slater, Illustrator by Andrea Beaty

Meesha Makes Friends by Tom Percival

December 6, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Questioneers and Big Bright Feelings series are a set of books dealing with social themes, such as confidence, being different, trying and failing, fears, lack of friendships all set for the (strong) four and up crowd. Aaron Slater, Illustrator by Andrea Beaty and David Roberts on illustrations, and Tom Percival doing double duty with Meesha Makes Friends continue the themes. Beaty and Roberts use bold, bright, busy text and colors in Aaron Slater, Illustrator. The rhymes and fantastic illustrations (that are brassy, sassy, and […]

Reissues of dePaola

The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog by Tomie dePaola

Marianna May and Nursey by Tomie dePaola

March 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My quick journal entry mentioned the death of Tomie dePaola. I recently found, three new (to me books). I haven’t read Fight the Night, yet, but did get a chance to read Marianna May and Nursey along with The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog. Many know dePaola as both the author and illustrator of the book. However, he has illustrated several books for others. The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog was created by Sarah Catherine Martin as […]

Hang Ten and save the day

Moby Shinobi and Toby, Too V01 Surf's Up by Luke Flowers

August 27, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Back a few reviews I mentioned rhyming ninjas, and here we are finally speaking of rhyming ninjas (I thought I would try and be cute and do a rhyme but trying to rhyme ninja on the fly was not happening). Here we have a cozy, early reader by Luke Flowers and his series Moby Shinobi and Toby, Too. The first addition to the series is Surf’s Up. It is part of the Acorn Book series that helps with reading on variety of levels. Mostly, they […]
