Life in Ruins

Ruins by Peter Kuper

August 2, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ruins by Peter Kuper is the kind of book that can’t really be rated. There are parts that were a five, parts that were a one, and parts a nice solid three. And even each page really could be given its own rating. The main part that I based my score on is the cleverness of the story. We follow a monarch butterfly as its journey parallels the human couple for their year in Mexico. Some things are left up to the imagination in places […]

City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky

September 18, 2023 by Bothari43 2 Comments

I have loved all the Tchaikovsky sci-fi I’ve read, but this is my first time reading his fantasy stuff. The world building reminded me of Guy Gavriel Kay (setting it up so every piece has its counter), but with teeth. And the immersiveness reminded me of New Crobuzon. The first time I read China Mieville’s The Scar, I would be surprised when I looked up from the page and didn’t see ocean. But this is all Adrian’s own, and has his wonderful stamp all over […]

Revolutionary Prudence Wright: Leading the Minute Women in the Fight for Independence by Beth Anderson

March 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do we want? Freedom! When do we want it? As soon as we put on some britches and head to the bridge! Beth Anderson brings to life Prudence Wright, who, even as a young girl, had a “spark of independence” in her. As an adult she organized the women of her town to help protect it as the men were off battling the British in the “big battle.” Revolutionary Prudence Wright: Leading the Minute Women in the Fight for Independence would be an astounding […]

Liar Liar Tri-corner hat on fire

Why Longfellow Lied: The Truth about Paul Revere's Midnight Ride by Jeff Lantos

December 14, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Why Longfellow Lied: The Truth about Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride by Jeff Lantos. This review is based on about me being half finished with the book. That does not mean the book is bad. In fact, it is the opposite. However, it is a bit on the slow side, making it a bit hard to finish the book in one or two sittings. You must be a fan of non-fiction and/or history to be the right audience. Plus, you should probably be at least 10 […]

You Say You Want a Revolution

Glorious Day by Skye Kilaen

August 1, 2020 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The first sentence of Skye Kilaen’s Glorious Day sold me. The fact that it was a fast moving, thoughtful, quick read kept me. It had been difficult that morning to fit treason in around my duties as vice-captain of the castle complex’s security forces. Elsenna Hazen is providing information to a rebel faction and hoping an end to the current king’s rule comes swiftly. She does not expect to survive the coming coup, in whatever form it takes. The Princess throws a wrench into Vice-Captain […]

It was fine!

You Never Forget Your First by Alexis Coe

April 8, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

The title is fun! The cover is cheeky! The opening quote from Brad Neely’s beloved “Washington” video was greatly appreciated! It seemed like we were off to the races, but then… … … it got awkward. I listened to this as an audio book. The performance was fine, but the layout of the opening was just a mess. It probably worked better on paper, but the book started with ten minutes of list-reading. Then a prologue. Then an introduction. Then more list reading. I found […]
