“I was so good at being a kid, and so terrible at being whatever I was now.”

Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

How is it that a middle-aged man is able to express the inner workings of an anxious teenage girl so well? The only writing I know is to “write what you know”, so it always blows me away when authors are able to so skilfully step into the shoes of the unfamiliar. In “Turtles All The Way Down”, John Green has captured my heart again. Reading this novel is like stepping into a time machine: when your Mom is like a loving but frustrating alien, […]

Dreamcatcher meets Lord of the Flies

The Troop by Nick Cutter

June 7, 2019 by Caesar's Wife 1 Comment

Nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I think I’ll go and eat worms! Big fat juicy ones. Eensie weensy squeensy ones. See how they wiggle and squirm! I will never again see that rhyme the same way. This book is bloody disgusting. A foul, body-horror, visceral experience usually reserved for John Carpenter movies. I was utterly unprepared to be so repulsed by the mere written word. The story centers on a troop of five 14 year old boy-scouts, their honourable scoutmaster, and a (very very […]

Bleak

Thirty-second book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. This book was suggested to me by my dear friend, Pavitra Vijayaraghavan. But like most novels that sound emotional and perhaps draining, I decided to let this one be for as long as I could. But I was constantly reminded to read it by Pavitra. I still managed somehow to avoid it, but no more. On 29th of August, I received a small note from her wishing me a wonderful year ahead (31st of August is […]

Likable Enough

April 12, 2014 by Julia in Austin 12 Comments

Everybody loves the Dresden Files. It’s so popular that the 15th book in the series is coming out sometime this year. And I can see why. Jim Butcher certainly knows his craft: story, pacing, characters, all the elements are working together. It’s a fun book. It’s a quick read, never boring. It’s good. Really. I just didn’t love it. You know what I mean? Harry Dresden is everything you could want in a hero, he’s perfectly imperfect. He’s a man with a solid philosophy of what […]
