A historical romance involving smuggling, lady doctors, an escape heist and a daring rescue operation

A Rogue by Night by Kelly Bowen

September 18, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

Sir Harland Hayward, Baron Strathmore, is something of an oddity among the nobility, in that he insists on not only continuing to run a shipping company, but he works as a practising physician, treating aristocrats and commoners alike. A less widely known fact is that he also helps his sister, the headmistress of the prestigious Haverhall School for ladies (a profession she has kept up with, even after becoming a duchess) to each year train some select students who are interested in becoming doctors as well. […]

4.5 stars #CBR11 Bingo: Science! One of the protagonists is a scientist and his scientific experiments plays an important part throughout the story. Official book description: Lawrence Browne, the Earl of Radnor, is mad. At least, that’s what he and most of the village believes. A brilliant scientist, he hides himself away in his family’s crumbling estate, unwilling to venture into the outside world. When an annoyingly handsome man arrives at Penkellis, claiming to be Lawrence’s new secretary, his carefully planned world is turned upside down. […]

And So It Begins

What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris

July 4, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR11 Book Bingo: And So It Begins From Goodreads, because it’s nearly three months since I finished this baby: It’s 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III’s England. Then a beautiful young woman is found raped and savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol discovered at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman […]

I can barely remember having read this one. Not a great selling point, I know.

Love in the Time of Scandal by Caroline Linden

June 22, 2019 by Malin 1 Comment

From Goodreads: Penelope Weston does not like Benedict Lennox, Lord Atherton. He may be the suave and charming heir to an earl, as well as the most handsome man on earth, but she can’t forget how he abandoned a friend in need—nor how he once courted her sister, Abigail. He’s the last man she would ever marry. If only she didn’t feel so attracted to the arrogant scoundrel… Once upon a time, Benedict thought he and Penelope got along rather well. Though he needs a […]

I’m so glad your first historical romance in several years was actually GOOD, Ms. Long!

Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long

June 11, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

From Goodreads: A mistress. A mountain of debt. A mysterious wreck of a building. Delilah Swanpool, Countess of Derring, learns the hard way that her husband, “Dear Dull Derring,” is a lot more interesting—and perfidious—dead than alive. It’s a devil of an inheritance, but in the grand ruins of the one building Derring left her, are the seeds of her liberation. And she vows never again to place herself at the mercy of a man. But battle-hardened Captain Tristan Hardy is nothing if not merciless. […]

A pretty good follow up to Sorcerer to the Crown, even if I did predict everything.

The True Queen (Sorcerer Royal, #2) by Zen Cho

May 10, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

First of all, on the one hand this was a good follow up to Sorcerer to the Crown, which took pretty much everyone by surprise several years ago. It was like a little breath of fresh air, a light fantasy full of people of color in a setting people of color don’t normally inhabit in fiction (Regency England), taking on existing power structures and being all clever and wonderful. This book continues that tradition (this time with an emphasis on kindness and identity). At the […]
