This was very smouldery but I am being picky

When He Was Wicked (Bridgertons #6) by Julia Quinn

September 18, 2019 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

So, this one was kind of weird! 3.5 stars, I’ll say, from the exact average of the first (great) half and the second (weird) half. Spoilers. But first, Goodreads summary: “In every life there is a turning point. A moment so tremendous, so sharp and breathtaking, that one knows one’s life will never be the same. For Michael Stirling, London’s most infamous rake, that moment came the first time he laid eyes on Francesca Bridgerton. After a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as […]

Good Old Reliable Mary Balogh

Someone to Honor by Mary Balogh

July 11, 2019 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

A forgotten pre-order delivery to my Kindle! Huzzah! A Regency romance with a custody battle, Someone to Honor is the sixth book in Mary Balogh’s current Westcott series. I’ve read all of the novels, but only reviewed a couple. She’s a writer whose work I don’t bounce in anticipation of, but she is a confident writer who can be turned to for effective and sometimes fantastic romance (Only Enchanting). Her characters are generally sensible people attempting to manage their lives in practical, pragmatic ways then find […]

My main issue with this book is that I just wanted more of it!

A Duke in Disguise (Regency Imposters, #2) by Cat Sebastian

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I’m having trouble with this one! On the one hand, I liked it. On the other, I thought it needed just a little something else. I never really cared the way I should have, the way I’ve cared about her other characters in past books. Verity Plum is a publisher and bookseller; John Ashby is an engraver. They have known one another for ages, and always a low-simmering attraction they’ve both ignored has been present. Both for different reasons have been scared to change their […]

A Long Awaited Return to Historical Romance

Palace of Rogues: Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long

June 10, 2019 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

Huzzah, Julie Anne Long has returned to Regency historical romances. Granted, the cover is displeasing, but the contents are not. Delilah, Lady Derring is not only recently widowed, she’s also discovered she is virtually penniless, and had the delightful experience of meeting her husband’s mistress, Mrs. Angelique Breedlove, immediately on the heels of the first two shocks. Showing disregard for the notion that they are competitors,  and demonstrating intestinal fortitude and chutzpah, Delilah and Angelique take the jewels they have from the erstwhile Earl Derring […]

The first of two amazing books I read to end the year. (I want to put them both on my end of year best!)

Band Sinister by K.J. Charles

December 31, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

“This, then, was a hellfire club: a debating society for alarming ideas.” What a delightful way to end the year. I always like K.J. Charles’s books, but this one just pushed every single one of my buttons. It’s an homage to Georgette Heyer, and a romance, but I’ve not read anything quite like it before. Guy Frisby and his sister Amanda are secluded from society in their quiet country home. An old scandal involving their mother and their neighbor besmirched their names and ruined Amanda’s […]

A Sweet, Clean Romance

July 26, 2018 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

I bought this book for three reasons – (1) the utterly charming cover, (2) my maiden name is Weaver and it was too much to resist, and (3) I met my husband because I spotted him across the room and said “Who is that?  I need to meet him.”, so I’m always a sucker for that story line. This was a very charming, ‘clean’ Regency romance.  It did not dive as deeply into the characters as I would have liked, but it was overall an enjoyable, […]
