Historical Romance, Emphasis on Rom–p

February 5, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 17 Comments

With a couple of days off work and my willing suspension of disbelief primed, I was ready to embark on the new Tessa Dare historicalish romance. “Historicalish”? It’s because of all the autobuy/truly enjoyable authors out there, Dare is the one who most pushes the credulity envelope* (much like that phrasing). Also, it sounds a little bit like ticklish and Say Yes to the Marquess is very funny, a truly entertaining read, and another romp to add to her catalogue. I feel like I could lift […]

Another Historical Romance, Late Even for Epiphany

February 2, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

I really like Cecilia Grant’s Regency romances, so I snapped up this novella over Christmas. She is a very strong writer and I buy or borrow everything she writes. In particular, she has a facility for changing tone and style according to the story she is telling. In this case, that means a light and droll spirit for a Yuletide sliding awry. A Christmas Gone Perfectly Wrong is a prequel novella for Grant’s Blackshear Family series. I read the books out of order and would […]

Read The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright Instead

January 28, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

Please see title. For more information, see below. How to Catch a Wild Viscount came as part of a 99 cent novella set. The grouping includes works by Courtney Milan, Caroline Linden, and other current authors. I quite like novellas as they are a quick read and strip the story down to its bare bones, but what I just said is the only reason to read this book. It’s an early work by an author on my autobuy list, Tessa Dare, and I just wanted […]

It rather seems like scoundrels throw the best parties.

January 27, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

Sarah MacLean’s Rules of Scoundrels series is a highly entertaining series of four books about each of the four owners of the Fallen Angel, a gaming hell in London. An exclusive establishment trading in sin and secrets, it’s the location of choice for aristocrats to gamble away their wealth and holdings, where they’re held accountable by the scandalous information they must reveal about themselves or other members in order to gain membership in the first place. The four owners, each aristocrats themselves, have a tarnished […]

A House for the Season – Book 3

January 19, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Another year has passed at the house in Mayfair, and this season brings the young and beautiful (and poor, and naive) Harriet Metcalf. She has inherited (sort of) her late neighbor’s daughters, who are barely younger than she is. In his will, she controls the estate until the girls are of age, and the dad specified in his will that Harriet was to take the girls to London for the season to marry them off. But here’s the thing. Harriet is beautiful. Too beautiful. And […]

A House for the Season Book 2

January 12, 2015 by Walking Widdershins 2 Comments

I grabbed the first three of this series all at once – they’re pretty cheap, at least for Kindle. I’ll be picking up the next few very soon – I have no idea how many there are. Guess I should find out so I don’t read the last one without realizing it’s the last one. It’s like eating the last cookie without realizing it, then reaching in the bag for the next one and there’s nothing there. So disappointing. Anyway, poor Jane has always been […]
