So many dresses get ruined in historical romances

September 18, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

The cover for this book is preposterous, but also… foreshadowing? So, I really liked this book. Both of the leads were wonderful, and I enjoyed how well the romance was integrated with the non-romantic plot. It goes something like this: Edward de Lacey, the second son of a Duke, has always been the responsible one. After his father dies, leaving behind whisperings of a possible first marriage that could invalidate the legitimacy of his and his brothers’ birth and claim to the title, Edward sets […]

Sincere, Steadfast Historical Romance as Always with Carla Kelly

September 8, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

Libby’s London Merchant and One Good Turn  are connected novels and more lovely, consistent, sincere stories from Carla Kelly. Clearly, I am going to read and find something to enjoy in every Regency romance novel in her catalog. This time, my attention was again captured by Kelly’s consistent strengths and minor imperfections (the enjoyable prose; the successful historical setting; her belief in the inherent goodness of people and it’s power to improve lives; her fascination with military history; and, her ability to create truly dastardly villains […]

More Historical Romances, Ones I Really Like

August 28, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 4 Comments

Their father dead and the Durham dukedom falling to a charming wastrel of an eldest son, three brothers’ grief is complicated by a blackmail scheme which threatens the exposure of family secrets that will take away their birthright. In each book in The Truth About the Duke series, one brother takes the lead in investigating the claims against their paternity and trying to find their origin. Although the de Lacey brothers spend little time together, what time they do establishes their relationships, rapport, and the […]

Contemporary LGBT Romance and LOOK AT THAT TITLE!

August 5, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 6 Comments

Winner of Title of the Year. All other books need not apply. From Amazon: Shy accountant, Evan McCormick, is conservative with his money and tough on his body, yet the decent nest egg he’s amassed, and the toned physique he’s formed isn’t enough to fulfill him. Evan’s starving for affection. As an introvert, bonding with others isn’t Evan’s best quality. When Dillon—an impeccable-dressed and debonair ad executive—joins the firm, Evan lets his guard down. An office scandal and sexually-overt billboards popping up all over New […]

Everything makes so much sense now

June 22, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

A Week to be Wicked, the second book in the Spindle Cove series, was among the first Regency romances I picked up that wasn’t Courtney Milan (obligatory Malin’s Top 100 Romances namedrop, since I found it there!) For whatever reason, it took me some time to get through the rest of the series, until now, where I suspect I have finished with its weakest entries. A Night to Surrender (3.5 stars) sets up the entire Spindle Cove premise and introduces all of the main players. There is […]

Hangups and hangovers

June 22, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

I do not know what do make of the cover model’s hairstyle, which looks very 2008 to me. Similarly, I had some trouble with this book, which in my view did not compare favorably to its two predecessors in this series. Let’s dig in: A Lady of Persuasion is about the spurned Sir Tobias Aldridge, whose then-fiance Sophia (from Surrender of a Siren) ran off and married some seaworthy fellow, and now Toby is put out over it and trying find comfort in his partyboy lifestyle. When […]
