A standalone, excellently plotted scifi with adult queer characters? <3 <3 <3

Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell

April 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Strong content warnings, from the author: https://everinamaxwell.com/content-wa… Many many thanks for the dual recommendations! llamareadsbooks and CoffeeShopReader both! Might I even consider this a five star book? We’ll call it 4.5 stars for now and re-evaluate at a future point. Edited to add yeah I didn’t even get more than 250 words into this review before realizing absolutely this was a great book. This is the book you want to pick up and read when you’re wondering what to read next. You’re not committing to a series–I can 100% guarantee you that […]

That’s right, the five star club has a new member

The Last Hellion by Loretta Chase

A recommendation by Malin! Yeah okay I debated whether to give this a four star or a five star review and then thought SCREW IT. I really, really enjoyed this one. Every time I was ready to be disappointed by the next plot turn, with the inevitable meeting of my modern day sensibilities with the realities of 1800s England gentry, Chase surprised me with time-appropriate plot resolutions that made my little romance novel loving heart sing. In glancing through some of the less-than-glowing reviews, people seemed […]

Financial Instability Really Puts a Damper on Fun

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

March 26, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

This book literally looks like a number of other books–namely Little Fires Everywhere, which has a similar-ish vibe. I don’t know why I didn’t pick it up before, but it might actually be because of Little Fires Everywhere, which completely and utterly lost me at the end (Spoiler:[when we learn that Mia stole someone else’s child and ran away.]) Instead, I read this on the recommendation of a friend who mentioned that Reid used to be a receptionist at his company, a job she took (presumably) after […]

Exactly what you’d expect (which isn’t bad!)

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James

February 16, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

A(nother) recommendation via Cannonball Read-ish/Pajiba. I wouldn’t call this revelatory or a retelling in the vein of McKinley, but it’s definitely the bones of the Cinderella story transplanted to a Regency-ish setting. And I can’t deny that I, personally, enjoyed it quite a bit (as a matter of fact, here is what happened–I started reading this yesterday night, had to put it away because I was very sleepy, and then woke up early this morning remembering that I was reading something I liked without recollecting exactly what it […]

Set My Heart to A Billion

Set My Heart to Five by Simon Stephenson

February 14, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

A recommendation from Cannonball Read by jomidi! This book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a book in the vein of All Systems Red and the accompanying books, because that is a book about a bot who develops…unwarranted feelings/empathy/care, and this seemed like a similarly set up premise and therefore something I would like. But it was not, which I should have realized because books are not just derivatives of other books. Authors generally like to write new works. Authors! Are great! …my attempt at language similar […]
