Room Mates

Make Room For Love by Darcy Liao

August 24, 2025 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR17 Bingo: Recommendation. This was recommended to me at a romance bookstore when I was looking for sapphic romance tales with trans MCs. We’re in an age where the formerly established fact of multicultural democracy is becoming unsettled. And as such, more stories by gay, queer, trans, enby creatives are going to be going by the wayside. You’ll probably still have “the table” at Barnes & Noble as the bookstore tries to cash in on branding writers by their identity more […]

“Oh,” said Louise, laughing softly. “You came here for a nice dose of schadenfreude, and it didn’t work.” She sang, “Saaaaw-ry.”

Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout

Running into 2025 with reading books recommended by people whose taste I really trust (hi, Julia!) but I’ve been putting off for whatever reason. In this case, it’s because I had this vague sense that the book was the anti-A Man Called Ove/Iona Iverson, e.g., what if you’ve got an elderly lead character and she’s not going to have a late-in-life fuzzy-feeling reconnection with the world plot that weaves together her neighbors? And that’s just…not really my vibe, normally speaking. Honestly? It’s not…not that, and it […]

a recommendation from banned books discussion

This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki, Jillian Tamaki

December 30, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Recommendation by teresaelectro! I think unlike many people, it took me a while to get into the artwork for this novel. On the other hand, I found the story quite compelling from the get go. As I went through it, though (and it’s a shorter graphic novel, so it did finish quite quickly), I found the artwork beautiful in its sparseness and details—and the story a bit lacking in nuance at the end. There’s not much of a plot per se, although plenty of spoilers that […]

“Are you in a cult?”

Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

January 10, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos 12 Comments

Well, I might be! Really, I’m inundated with cultish language- much like most of you are as well! The above question, posited by our own CBR gurus and shared across social media, was attached to an excellent review by faintingviolet. Her review kindled a blaze with other CBR readers- myself included! Our Goodreads walls are packed with update-after-update barrages of people frantically ripping through this read! I am very much looking forward to the Cultish flood headed our way. Now- back to the question. Am I […]

Enjoyed reading this one!

Who's that Earl by Susanna Craig

July 15, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Home: while I’m not saying it’s a epic saga about the journey to find a place to call home, whether Jane will finally get to call a place home (or if Thomas will come and take Dunnock away from her) is a main plot point! Based on a rec from llamareadsbooks for the second in the series! So I will say that I enjoyed this and stayed in bed one morning in lieu of going to work to read it. It’s the first book in […]

Dragons and Humans Go Together like…Oil and Water

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

June 21, 2021 by wicherwill 1 Comment

Recommended by Ellesfena: https://everyday-offershub.com/2021/05/tess-of-the-road-ellesfena/ This makes for an interesting book to review. Yes, I think it’s a three star book even though I enjoyed it quite a bit and will definitely continue to read the second book in the duology (and then read the third book, which is in the same world but a different set of characters? Not entirely certain how they connect, and I don’t want to figure out because, ofc, spoilers). My main gripe is that I was very into the world […]
