Highly Debatable is right

The 100 Most Jewish Foods by Alana Newhouse

March 1, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I have had an interesting run with library books lately. I have been going in for one thing and often coming out with at least one thing I hadn’t planned on. This is not a complaint, but I have to wonder if my doppelganger in terms of reading tastes may have been recently hired on there. So, on to The 100 Most Jewish Foods: A Highly Debatable List. I am not Jewish, but I do have an interest in food writing and history. This book […]

CBRBingo – Birthday. A Little Lagniappe

Gumbo Life: Tales from the Roux Bayou by Ken Wells

August 25, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Birthday! I don’t think I’m alone in this, but at the launch of CBR Bingo I already had a few books in the queue so I am doing what I can to find space on the bingo card for them, at times having to pull off a bit of a shoehorn situation. And thus, I discovered the Ken Wells’ birthday was August 5th. BOOM. SQUARED. Also, after reading this book, I sent the following Facebook message to the author. No response yet, […]

“Men of action, above all those whose actions are guided by love, live forever.” – Jose Marti

The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya

January 28, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Arturo Zamora and his family are tight — and I mean the whole family.  He and his extended family all live in the same apartment complex. The heart of the family is his Abuela, who still manages her restaurant “La Cocina” which she and her late husband opened when they emigrated here from Cuba. Her daughter is the master chef, but Abuela makes her daily rounds, greeting every customer — and her love and attentiveness is half the reason the restaurant is always packed (the […]

Careful Hannah, Moishe Might be Getting More Interesting than You

March 24, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Question: why end a novel with a sentence that’s supposed to be a cliffhanger when it was obvious three books ago? Seriously. I both don’t understand how that could not have been obvious, and at the same time am very glad to see it. Unfortunately it would be spoilers to say much more, but I now have hope that maybe Hannah will eventually be back to her fun pre-Ross self in whatever the sequel to Raspberry Danish Murder is. Even though I totally saw that […]

Darn Hooch

January 23, 2016 by NVVN 5 Comments

This is the fourth book in the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade series by JJ Cook.  The story centers around fire chief Stella Griffin, some ghosts and a hooch war.  By the way, that’s hooch as in moonshine, not any of the other terms you might be thinking of (money, female private parts, a loose woman, a scuzzy man or half of a K-9/cop duo).  There’s also some stereotypical small town stuff (romance or the lack thereof, family issues, politics, misogyny and food) to round out […]

Tasty memories

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Relish is this awesome graphic novel + recipe book hybrid by Lucy Knisley. She details her love for food with illustrated stories from her childhood. Her mom is a chef while her dad’s a gourmet foodie. Together, they expose her to culinary delights from birth as she tags along to restaurant kitchens and gatherings of her mom’s food scene pals. Even though her parents divorce, they continue to impart their own culinary wisdom to their daughter. Each chapter ends with a personal recipe from that particular era of her life. Her […]
