“Jesus, who would want to read about a failed old nun, with her stipend, and second-hand shoes.”

Murder at Gulls Nest by Jess Kidd

What a kooky mystery book. My mom was visiting for the last few days and she and I love to get our blankets and read (which we indulged in doing) so she was perfectly placed to ask me what was going on within the fun orange cover of this book. The quick logline doesn’t really capture the vibe of the book, though, and I don’t know whether I sold her on it or not. Murder at Gulls Nest features Nora, a former Carmelite nun who has left her order after three decades and is on the hunt for a […]

Another Infuriating Debacle.

Doctored by Charles Piller

This ended up being another one of those books I had to read over an extended period of  time due the stress it gave me. This book shares some similarity to John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood in a way, but it covers a field that I am somewhat less familiar with, which also contributed to it becoming a stressful read. In addition, unlike the Theranos story, you also can’t just lay blame here at the feet of a small number of individuals. The issues here are […]

“Bad Llama. Level 3. It’s a llama, but it’s bad. If he were human, he’d be covered in prison tattoos and would be hanging out in front of the Circle K hitting on 14-year-old girls.”

Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman

CBR17 Bingo: Rec’d (I honestly don’t know how many people have raved about this book, on CBR, other review sites on the internet, as well as in my IRL book club) By now, most people who are even vaguely interested in this series probably know what it’s about, but I’ll try to give a brief summary. Carl is wandering around, half-dressed in the snow, looking for his ex-girlfriend’s prize-winning Persian cat, when Earth is suddenly attacked by aliens. All the buildings collapse in an instant […]

“Spite was honor when it was the only weapon you had against someone more powerful” – BINGO!

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian

September 19, 2022 by Malin 7 Comments

4.5 stars CBR14: Rec’d (this has been recommended by multiple Cannonballers and pretty much every romance review blog I can think of) Edward Percival “Percy” Talbot, Lord Holland, returns to England after several years abroad in Europe to discover that his mother died in his absence, and his deeply unpleasant father hastily remarried, to Percy’s best friend from childhood, Lady Marian Hayes, who also had time to birth Percy a baby sister. Furthermore, Marian reveals that a blackmailer has contacted her with proof that the […]

The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power by Deirdre Mask

September 8, 2022 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

The Address Book is one of many published in early 2020 which likely suffered from a distracted world. Early 2020 was a rough time to publish and attempt to publicize a book. But thanks to lists of books you missed I’m glad this one came to my attention. Separately, recognizing Hollywood, Florida the city next to my hometown listed alongside much larger cities seemed a perfectly good reason to add this book to my reading list. If you think about street addresses, it is likely […]

The English Patient

The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje

August 3, 2022 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

CBR14Bingo – Rec’d – This book is “recommended” in the sense that when I was in high school, a crush of mine told me I should read it, and it was presented in an obviously challenging way, but I didn’t get it. I also didn’t get that it was flirtatious, and honestly a little revealing about their intentions. The book has the real disservice of people deciding that the movie is long and boring. I actually like the movie a lot, but the weird thing […]
