Can’t leave justice up to God.

Tread of Angels by Rebecca Roanhorse

November 5, 2022 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

It took me a minute to wrap my head around Rebecca Roanhorse’s fantasy western novella, Tread of Angels. Some part of my brain is still immersed in her Between Earth and Sky series so I was a bit resistant to the Western town setting. But, as always, Roanhorse delivers a gripping story. Celeste Semyaza and her sister, Mariel, are half-Fallen (their mother was descended from the Fallen Angels) in the mining town of Goetia. Celest can pass as an Elect, and deals cards at Eden. […]

Allergic to an audiobook.

Fevered Star (Between Earth and Sky, #2) by Rebecca Roanhorse

June 29, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 26/30 I’m sad that I’m rating this three stars, but it’s representative of my experience listening to the audiobook. If/when I re-read, I think I will like it better. Also, when I see where the story is going in book three. Sad face. My biggest takeaway from this book is that I found it extremely difficult to make everything that was happening cohere into a story in my mind. Everything felt so disconnected, and so I was […]

When can I preorder book 3???

Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

June 6, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

Between Earth and Sky, Book #2 I read Black Sun, the first book in the planned Between Earth and Sky trilogy last summer, on vacation. I inhaled that book, and it ended up being one of my best of 2021. So I got myself right on the holds list for Book #2. Of course, I neglected to go back and really refresh myself on the happenings of book 1 before diving into book 2 – which is 100% my fault. But beware, book 2 picks […]

“They say the storm has come, but to me, it feels like it’s only beginning.”

Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

April 18, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 3 Comments

Black Sun (and its cover) was one of my favorite books of 2020. It’s no surprise that I’ve been eagerly anticipating the next book in the trilogy, though the lackluster cover definitely gave me pause. Luckily, the book itself, while most certainly a middle book, met my expectations. As you’d expect, this review contains spoilers for Black Sun. After the events at Convergence, the Watchers are dead and Tova remains in a twilight, liminal state. For Serapio, Naranpa, Xiala and Okoa, it’s not only their […]

The Crow God Reborn remakes us all

Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse

April 9, 2022 by Emmalita 9 Comments

The tl:dr version of this review is: I could not put it down. It was so, so good. Very much a middle book, but a very entertaining middle book. Fevered Star starts with a murder. Far from the chaos in Tova, Lord Balam murders a thief so that he can walk through dreams.  Serapio wakes up with a wound he cannot heal and uncertain of who he is now, having expected to die at the Convergence. Naranpa wakes up in a tomb, back from the […]

We have become a place of long weeping

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse

March 29, 2022 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Black Sun is one of those books that for some reason I don’t read because I know I will really like it. And then I finally read it and I’m mad at myself both for not reading it sooner and also for having read it at all because now I’ll never read it again for the first time. My brain is a weird place. I have an arc of Fevered Star, which has driven me to finally breaking the glass on Black Sun. I listened […]
