“No. You are divine. You are impossible to get enough of. Perhaps some people would disagree, but those people don’t especially matter, because you’re mine.”

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

June 9, 2021 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

I absolutely adored Act Your Age, Eve Brown. I *think* Take a Hint, Dani Brown is my favorite of the Brown sisters series, but this one certainly gave it a run for its money. In similar fashion to Get a Life, Chloe Brown we are in an enemies to lovers romance (which has grown on me considerably over the past few years) but in Hibbert’s hands it’s really much closer “you annoy me but once I actually get to know you I’m enamored of you” […]

“Then he slid one big, warm hand over the nape of her neck, squeezed, and said, “Don’t look so surprised. You know I love your brain.”

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

May 29, 2021 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

When I finished Get a Life, Chloe Brown earlier this month I immediately requested Take a Hint, Dani Brown from the library – the reading experience had been that good. When I finished Take a Hint this week, I did the same thing for Act Your Age, Eve Brown and it is currently waiting for me at my local library branch. Talia Hibbert has written some of my favorite reading experiences of the year thus far in this series and I imagine I will be […]

“Don’t dismiss your emotions and your self-protection as just a fucked-up decision. Don’t reduce something so complex and real and important to nothing.”

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

May 4, 2021 by faintingviolet 6 Comments

I loved Get a Life, Chloe Brown. I swooned, I laughed, I commiserated. Hibbert delivered on all fronts. This is my first Talia Hibbert book (I’ve followed her on Twitter for quiet awhile and enjoy her greatly there), and it lives up to the hype. In broad strokes, it’s a relatively slow burn romance that slips right past enemies to lovers tropes and instead lands in the “you annoy me but once I actually get to know you I’m enamored of you” zone which isn’t […]

“A dreamer, I walked enchanted, and nothing held me back.”

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

October 24, 2020 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Rebecca has been on my literary radar for 20 years and on my to read list for 6. It has felt like a big, important work that I needed to read, if only to more easily understand some of the references that are out and about: Mrs. Danvers, the opening line of “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderly again”, and so on. Rebecca joined the list of books I categorized as White Whales (Daughter of Fortune, The House of the Spirits, The Lottery, […]

“You keep going, you’ll eventually realize that the one true answer to all your questions is: Of course it doesn’t make sense—what business do you have expecting things to make sense?” (Bingo #3)

Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh

October 24, 2020 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Back when I reviewed Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half in 2014 I asserted then that she was one of the most honest writers and humorists that you were likely to come across on your bookstore shelves. Her follow up, Solutions and Other Problems supports my earlier claim and is so much better, more thoughtful than its predecessor. Each chapter contains the kind of introspection that will make you think “yup, I know that feeling”. This one isn’t as funny as Hyperbole but that matches […]

“Even though all these people were dealing in illicit activities, they each had a moral sense that their particular outlawed product was more just than another.” (CBR12 Bingo)

American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road by Nick Bilton

August 7, 2020 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

I had already decided to read American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road this year before I saw the Bingo board, and the minute I saw the Money! square I knew this book had to be the book I read for it. The instructions for the square are rather straightforward: A fiction or non-fiction book about money, acquiring money legally or illegally, or following the money. American Kingpin is a narrative non-fiction recounting of how one man started a […]
