Not a great collection of stories, in my opinion.

A Universe of Wishes by ed. Dhonielle Clayton

October 1, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a pretty disappointing collection. I only enjoyed a handful of stories. I think the thing that frustrates me the most about YA fantasy and sf recently is that these are the genres of the imagination, and yet so many authors keep telling the same old stories, even, as it turns out, when those stories are populated by a diverse cast of characters, featuring characters of many races, genders, and sexualities. Some of these stories were dull and uninspired, some I thought were just […]

“Power taken and not returned incurs a debt. And the universe, and the debt, will always come to collect, one way or another.” #CBRBINGO – Mythic

Legendborn (Legendborn, #1) by Tracy Deonn

September 29, 2021 by narfna 4 Comments

This takes tired YA fantasy tropes and makes them feel so fresh. Just a super solid book and I can’t wait to see where she takes the rest of the series. So I finished this book back in July and I was riding high off of it, but I procrastinated the review, so my middle-aged brain is having to strain a little on this one. Bottom line before you read any further, if you normally stay away from YA fantasy like I do, because of […]

“I wondered what it was like to live without that weight on your shoulders, the weight of the murdered ancestors, the stolen land, the abused children, the burden every Native person carries.” #CBRBINGO – Fauna

Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden

September 27, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

Virgil Wounded Horse is an enforcer on the Rosebud reservation, the home of the Lakota in South Dakota. Due to some fucked up laws, felonies are subject to federal prosecution, and the feds refuse to prosecute many serious crimes on the reservation, leaving murders, rapes, you name it, uninvestigated. The residents turn to Virgil. For some extra cash, he’ll give the perpetrator a beat down, oftentimes a very violent one. Vigilante justice is more reliable than the so-called justice of white people. The plot kicks […]

There was no other way I could go with the Self Care BINGO square than by reviewing a fanfic. #CBRBINGO – Self Care

Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast by violue

Link to the story on AO3: Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast Firstly, if you are not familiar with fanfic (which I hope is not many of you, because it is a true pleasure to indulge in) many fics have individual titles but are part of a series that also has a title. I’ve used the series title for this one, Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast, because it makes me laugh, and because I honestly think it’s a better title than part one of the fic, […]

Maybe should have done the audiobook instead?

In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero, Michelle Burford

July 9, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 18/30 Like other people have said in their reviews, this is an interesting story, a story that should be told, but unfortunately the book itself just isn’t very well written. It felt underdeveloped and amateurish, even with the co-author. (It also bothered me that the publishing company/editor couldn’t bother to include accents and tildes when the author used Spanish, but that’s not the author’s fault and didn’t really affect my rating; I just wanted to complain about it. Esta […]

Food and socially conscious history together; I wish I would have liked it more.

The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South by Michael W. Twitty

July 7, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 11/30 I’m feeling like a dick on this one, but I didn’t have the reading experience I was hoping for with such glowing reviews. I didn’t hate it, or even dislike it, but I didn’t really like it all that much either. I had two main problems here. The first may or may not have been exacerbated by the second, but as of right now, I have no way of knowing. Before I get to my issues, this book […]
