Still a perfect fantasy novella.

The Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson

August 18, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I almost don’t have anything to say about this, because it just is. I’m taking away my former 4.5 star rating, and this is now just a straight five. It is a perfect fantasy novella. This takes place in Sanderson’s Cosmere (a shared universe for all his adult fantasy), but can be read completely on its own, and would also be a good introduction to both Sanderson’s work, and to high fantasy in general. Our main character is Shai, a Forger, who has just been captured […]

Abaddon's Gate (The Expanse, #3) by James S.A. Corey

Yeah, five stars. I knew this was going to happen, that I would feel the need to give this one five stars after a re-read, because this is the book that made me fall in love with the series. I’m not sure what it is about it exactly that makes me like it more than the first two books, which I like a lot (five stars worth now for #1!). This story just has such a clear purpose, a clear arc, and wild stuff happens […]

Remember when Avasarala asked Jules Pierre-Mao if he needed to go to the potty? What a great moment in literature.

Caliban's War (The Expanse, #2) by James S.A. Corey

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 16/30 Again, liked this one more on the second read. Once again, my previous review is gobbledygook. This review isn’t going to be anything special because I’m forcing myself to write it. I’m starting my re-read of book three tomorrow and I don’t want there to be any emotional cross-contamination. (Especially since I have a good feeling I’ll be five starring #3 on re-read.) Like the first book, I enjoyed myself with this one a lot more […]

From 3.5 stars to 5 stars on re-read. Congratulations to me on hypothesizing correctly.

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse, #1) by James S.A. Corey

I have lost all objectivity in regards to this series. I knew I would like this better on re-read, but I didn’t anticipate just how differently I’d feel. I’m bumping this up a full star from 3.5 to 4.5, and rounding up past that to five stars, because as previously mentioned: objectivity, gone. Haha look at my first review below. I have very different things to say now! The weird thing is, I can remember being the person who wrote that review below, but I […]

The Silver Chair (The Chronicles of Narnia, #6) by C.S. Lewis

December 27, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

I think this might the book in this series I’ve read the least, even below the two books I actually don’t really like all that much (The Horse and His Boy and The Last Battle). It’s certainly the book I remembered the least. I remembered the broad strokes, but details had been completely lost to me, which means I didn’t read it enough to burn it into my brain like I did the others. What this meant is that I was able to read this […]

The Hating Game, in three reviews

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

December 20, 2021 by wicherwill 8 Comments

Re-re-read (December 19, 2021): Yes, I did just re-re-read this one–for the second time this year–after watching the movie. This is definitely getting bumped up to five stars. What is it about this book that is so alluring? I’ve written about it before, but if you scroll through my reviews you can see that I didn’t actually “get” some of the set up Hating Games prior to the start of the romance bits. But now, after having read some lovely reviews of this book and […]
