I still need to go back and write my review of the David trilogy (the previous three books in this series, which make up an informal trilogy), which didn’t get posted in 2017 alas and alack, but I wanted to make sure and get this review out before I start my next book of 2018. Once again, it seems, I’m starting out the year with an Animorphs Chronicles book, which are hands down my favorite books of the series. These books are honestly one of […]
I can’t emphasize enough how good this book and this series are.
So I deleted my original review of this book on Goodreads (but not on CBR) because I’ve never been happy with it. I never felt like it fully conveyed what I was trying to say. Heck, I’m not sure I even knew what it was that I wanted to say! I remember thinking this book was so dense and a little impenetrable, and now upon my first re-read, I’ve got none of that. This time around, I sunk right into this world like it was […]
Comfort re-read #2.
Another comfort re-read. I’m beginning to sense a pattern here. I read the hardcover this time, but weirdly, I still heard the audiobook narrator’s voice in my head the whole time. I listened to that back in 2014, so I guess he was just a super memorable narrator. Thankfully, I did NOT have Matt Damon in my head in any form. Though, weirdly, all the other actors from the movie were there. Except for the main character (and Venkat Kapoor, whose race they just changed […]
Comfort re-read #1.
Comfort re-read this over the weekend when The Dark Tower was kicking my ass. It did its job admirably. Well, actually, I will confess that the bleak atmosphere of Cline’s 2045 wasn’t as comforting as it usually is because all the bleakness and decay felt a lot less imaginary and removed than it has in the past. But the gamified storyline and the sheer pleasure of solving puzzles and having adventures and beating the corrupt bad guy in order to win the day was still really fucking […]
Finishing my The Hollows re-read
So I’ve been doing a re-read of all of Kim Harrison’s The Hollows books in audio since March this year. This is my review for the latter part of the series (with the exception of book 10, A Perfect Blood, which seems impossible to get in audio book format, either on Audible or in any library I’ve got access to. So with that one, I skim-read the relevant Rachel and Trent parts and moved quickly on to the next in the series. I have reviewed all of these […]
Revisiting a classic I had seriously forgotten every aspect of – also, Cannonball
Sara Fielding and Derek Craven have a hell of a “meet-cute”. While researching her future novel in one of the seedier corners of the East End, Sara comes across Craven being held down and attacked by two thugs. They’ve slashed his face open, and she intends only to fire a warning shot from her pistol (which sh obviously keeps in her reticule for defencive purposes), when she instead ends up killing one of the assailants. She discovers that the man whose life she saved is […]
