It’s all fun and games until someone gets waterboarded. Or raped. Or murdered in a snuff film. You know what, fuck it.

I had such high hopes for this one, guys. Pretty Girls had positive reviews, strong word-of-mouth, and I really pretty cover that I could Instagram the hell out of. You see?! And yay, mini cupcakes!   But by the time I was almost done with this book, trudging through the last 100 pages, all I could think was, “I’m getting real tired of this shit.” I don’t know if you’ve managed to piece this together yet, but I read a lot. Good books, bad books, […]

The future is dystopian and full of idiots

February 9, 2016 by MacrameTrumpToupee 1 Comment

Pajiban’s might have seen the trailer for the new Tom Hiddleston/Jeremy Irons movie based on this book which looks pretty great. It’s full of gorgeously brutalist architecture and stylised sets and cinematography that hint at the original time period of the book (the mid 70’s). My advice, maybe just watch the movie and skip the book? First up, I’m going to tell you that a bunch of dogs get killed and/or eaten in this book. That is a total deal breaker for me and if I’d […]

A historical romance dealing with the aftermath of rape

December 20, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

Miss Prudence Merriweather Payton has been dubbed “London’s Least Likely to Be Caught in a Compromising Position” and after four seasons, she may be the only woman to go unmarried for so long after graduation her finishing school. No one, not even the loving aunt who raised her or her two best friends, knows that Prudence was raped at a ball early in her first season and has made very sure she’s never alone with a man or considered marriage material. After all, her entire […]

A Harlan Coben mystery which failed to inspire

February 25, 2015 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Oh well, you can’t win them all. Coben’s novels are generally consistently good, and while The Woods was well enough written, with the typical surprise twists and turns that are standard in a good Coben novel, it wasn’t enough for me to give this novel more than a 2 star, I’m afraid.   County prosecutor Paul Copeland is knee-deep in a rape case that he is determined to prosecute to the end. Two snarky frat boys from wealthy families lured a stripper and single mother […]

Pretty sure this is the worst book I’ll read all year

August 10, 2014 by Malin 8 Comments

Warning! This review will contain spoilers for the book, because it’s impossible for me to convey all my vitriol without going into plot specifics.  Molly Sommerville (who we first met as a frankly horrid teenager in It Had to Be You) is now all grown up and making a living as a children’s book author, writing illustrated books about Daphne the Bunny, a rabbit who appears to wear designer clothes and going on adventures based on events in Molly’s own life. While Molly inherited a multi-million […]
