So many trigger warnings

Lies Lies Lies by Adele Parks

March 9, 2020 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

I actually finished this book weeks ago but have been struggling to articulate my thoughts enough since to write a review, mostly because I found it so……..ugh. And while I don’t want to spoil the twists for other readers, I feel it would be remiss not to mention that this book features alcoholism, child endangerment, rape and sexual assault, coercive control and emotional abuse. Sanctimonious and spineless Daisy has been married to alcoholic Simon for years. They have the perfect ballet dancing daughter, Poppy, and […]

Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter

December 29, 2019 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Anything by Karin Slaughter, and this book in particular, should come with a trigger warning, so just so you know: MASSIVE TRIGGER WARNING.  In the small, sleepy town of Heartsdale, GA, pediatrician and sometime medical examiner Sara Linton is having an uncomfortable lunch with her nosy sister. When she goes off to the bathroom, she finds a woman bleeding to death. She’s been gruesomely assaulted and within minutes, she dies. It’s up to Sara and her ex-husband, Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver, to find the […]

Oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

A Faint Cold Fear by Karin Slaughter

September 5, 2019 by Zirza Leave a Comment

On a sweltering summer afternoon, medical examiner Sara Linton is called in to examine a suspected suicide at the nearby college. With her very pregnant sister in tow, she sets out to examine the body. But then the sister is stabbed and suicide becomes increasingly less likely. Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver – Sara’s on again, off again significant other – struggles to make headway into the case. First and foremost in his crosshairs is his former subordinate, Lena Adams. Now working as campus security, […]

When the illustrations for the article make you decide you have to read the book.

Sometime in 2016 I found a list of best long-form reporting stories of the past year. Deep into the list, I clicked on this story from ProPublica and The Marshall Project, about a young woman who reported being repeatedly raped over many hours by a masked man, in her apartment, and the nightmare scenario which unfolded as she was accused of making a false report, then arrested and forced to go before a judge to plead guilty for her “crime.” The story was embedded into my memory for […]

This is as much a self-portrait of an obsessive mind as it is a true crime book.

I will not let this review defeat me! I will not! I have so much to say about this book I don’t know how to organize it, and I’m still not sure what I’m going to rate it even as I type this; and I’m still freaked out by it, and still sad, and I want the Golden State Killer caught, but what if he’s dead?? If he’s dead, we’re never going to catch him!! ARGGGGh. Okay, so I’ve been looking forward to this book […]

Burn it all down

February 19, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Obviously books about rape aren’t the easiest reads in the world, but this one actually felt easier than most. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to get angry and be horrified about in here. It’s just that the authors presented their material in a way that wasn’t gratuitous or overwhelmingly gruesome. I felt like they walked the line between letting the reader know the full picture of what happened without going overboard on crime details. A few years ago, ProPublica and The Marshall Project […]
