The Prince Is the Troll

The Prince and the Troll by Rainbow Rowell

January 9, 2021 by wicherwill 2 Comments

I am not sure what this is, but I’ll attempt to define it by what I know what it’s not. It’s not a full story–it’s part of Amazon’s bizarre plan of world Prime domination, which apparently has focus tested “multiple short essay-to-short-story length Kindle Books” as a perk that people enjoy? Seems gratuitous–I have Prime because I want Video and to occasionally order things I can’t find elsewhere–but I’m not complaining if authors I like get some of that Bezos money. There’s a lot of […]

Back at it again with another Amazon Original Series! My brain is totally fried with year-end nonsense, but this series has given me nice little breaks while going about my day-to-day chores and adventures. I didn’t need any convincing to give this collection a “go”; I love a good fairytale retell or folklore restructure- no one will ever come close to Angela Carter, but I certainly won’t leave them out in the cold! The Prince and the Troll 3/5 I know that YOU know this, but […]

Misty water-colored memories…. (CBR12Bingo 2: Nostalgia)

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

October 30, 2020 by octothorp 1 Comment

So, this book is set in 2011, and I was getting married that year at age 25. Not strictly my teen years. However, I’m counting it for two reasons – 1) 9/11/2001 is key to the plot, when I was an actual sophomore in high school, and 2) though the Harry Potter books exist in this universe, Simon Snow is very very very obviously a Harry Potter analogue, and the penultimate book in that series was released in 2005, when I was in my first […]

“Honey, I’ve watched a lot of 90210. The parents weren’t even on the show once Brandon and Brenda went to college. This is your time – you’re supposed to going to frat parties and getting back together with Dylan.”

Well, this was cute. Maybe it wasn’t as robust as I had hoped, but my god, it was cute. I had heard a few weeks ago that Rainbow Rowell had agreed to release a Manga version of Fangirl…and without any further details, I preordered right away. I didn’t realize it was just “Part 1” and that it would end right when I didn’t want it to. I have no idea how much longer I am going to have to wait to see Levi take Cath […]

The dangers of not doing research before traveling abroad

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 10, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I can’t even with these boys. These BOYS!  They can’t seem to use their words with each other.  Baz can be smooth as hell when he wants to, but he and Simon have a verbal block between them, and I can’t even.  I want to smack them both upside the head, or give them a truth serum or something.  They need to talk about their FEELINGS and they just WON’T!   Anyway, we’re in America now, and on a road trip!  Simon, Penny, and Baz […]

This girl needs some serious therapy…

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

October 9, 2020 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

We picked this book to be our February Teen Book Club pick, stealing our Cannonball book club format for a Facebook discussion.  We picked it without anyone having read it ahead of time, which may not have been a completely great decision, but oh well! The first thing that struck me was “Wow, there’s a lot of foul language in this!”  I mean, it’s nothing that kids today haven’t heard constantly, but it’s still a little surprising coming right out of the gate.  And it’s […]
