Too short but very sweet

January 11, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Almost Midnight collects two short stories by Rainbow Rowell that have appeared elsewhere, and features beautiful illustrations throughout by Simini Blocker. In Midnights, Mags and Noel meet one New Year’s Eve and become fast friends. The story follows them on subsequent Eves for a few years and we see that Mags has more than friendly feelings towards Noel. Unfortunately he keeps kissing other girls at midnight. In this latest year Mags decides she’s had enough and hides out so she doesn’t have to witness him […]

A Fun and Humane Romantic Comedy

January 2, 2018 by Halbs 2 Comments

While I enjoy romantic comedies on the big screen, I know very little about the romance genre and its myriad subgenres. The good folks at CBR have made some solid recommendations for me in the past to help me get into romance books (ex. The Hating Game) and were able to fine-tune those recs even more based on my feedback. That’s how I got to Rainbow Rowell’s Attachments. Well done, CBR! This is my kind of book!  I enjoyed Attachments because it was approachable, relatable, and […]

I want to read this again and again.

“Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” Ugh, dammit. That’s such a good line. Why can’t I write like that? Why can’t everyone write like that? It’s appropriate to the age of the character but still profound. This was a Christmas gift and I devoured it as quickly as I could, which isn’t as fast as it used to be thanks to the baby.  I requested […]

And a Rainbow New Year

December 30, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Happy New Year! (Almost) As a treat to myself I purchased this sparkly-covered illustrated version of two of Rainbow Rowell’s short stories which I have already read and reviewed. I love Simini Blocker’s art (I have two of her posters at home) and I love Rainbow Rowell so this was a bit of a no brainer for me. For those of you unfamiliar, these are pretty good gateway drugs to Rainbow. Midnights is very much like her novel length works. We experience four new years’ […]

Let’s talk about Seth, baby.

I’ve been on a big Rainbow Rowell re-read lately. I got all of her books on audible, and with the new job, I’m in the car a lot. Seriously, so much. And I find Rebecca Lowman’s voice to be so soothing, that even the Beltway traffic doesn’t bother me too much when I’m listening to her. And FYI, this review is pretty much a big huge spoiler. If you haven’t read it, go ahead and pick up a copy. I’ll wait. The other day I […]

Star Wars and a Happy New Year

December 13, 2017 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

Rainbow Rowell is a CBR treasure so naturally I had to seek out Almost Midnight, two short stories published together in the UK, by cleverly giving it to my sister for her birthday and then borrowing it. I had already read “Kindred Spirits” but I had not read “Midnights” before. I have already read and reviewed “Kindred Spirits “ but it was fun to reread it leading up to the release of Last Jedi this Friday. My husband and I bought tickets a month ago but then he was unexpectedly sent […]
