Cannonballer Says

Landline by Rainbow Rowell

July 18, 2019 by octothorp 1 Comment

Ok, my Cannonball Says entry for Bingo might be kind of a cheat, because… let’s be real, I’m enough of a Rowell fangirl that I was gonna buy this with or without a good review from a cannonballer. That said, choosing this book allows me to highlight how clever scootsa1000’s review title is (let’s talk about Seth, baby) as well as to tip my hat to a cannonballer who might love Rainbow Rowell more than I do. I feel like this might be one of […]

Never doubt Rainbow.

Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

June 5, 2019 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

A few weeks ago, while sitting around and browsing Instagram instead of doing whatever I was supposed to be doing, I saw a post from Rainbow Rowell talking about a book coming out soon from an author that she loves, and mentioned Emergency Contact. I hadn’t heard of it before, and Rainbow claimed was  her favorite book of 2018! Rainbow went on and on, talking about how excited she was for the new book and how much she loved EC, and I just said WHAT […]

“Nobody’s lives just fit together. Fitting together is something you work at. It’s something you make happen – because you love each other.”

Landline by Rainbow Rowell

Still good, but not my fave of hers. Like, 4.5 stars. If I had to rate all her books, this one would be nearer to the bottom, just above Eleanor & Park, and that’s purely personal preference speaking. All of the Rowells are Quality. (I have no idea what to expect for the forthcoming Pumpkinheads, but I am nevertheless excited in my ignorance.) This is definitely the most adult of her books, not a true romance, but a story of marriage and the hard work […]

Right there with ya

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

So after the sarcasm fire of my last review, I need to applaud that this book ostensibly written for young adults had a more realistic picture of romantic relationships than The Glass Ocean – a more “literary” historical fiction – did. Our hero Cath develops relationships that are more complex than “buhh I luhh him,” in ways that are recognizable to actual humans. (Can not stand books that insist that a character loves another without showing the reader why they are. Beauty is not a […]

Cozy re-read.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

February 20, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

Quick review for a re-read. I still love this book. It’s still a great character study of Cath, who has anxiety and abandonment issues, and has huddled in on herself like a turtle, afraid to put out feelers to the outside world. She uses reading and writing fanfiction as an outlet for her creativity, and a way to forget herself for a while, but she wants to be a professional writer, and that means a type of writing she isn’t comfortable with yet, a type […]

Love before first sight

Lincoln’s job is terrible. He has to monitor emails at a newspaper and send warning messages to staff whose emails have inappropriate content. He hates it. He works nights and hardly sees anyone and the creepy nature of his work is getting him down. Except when he reads Beth and Jennifer’s exchanges. He starts to look forward to those. And he doesn’t send them a warning like he knows he should. Soon it’s not just that he likes reading those messages, it’s that he likes […]
