The worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

October 27, 2019 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: I Love This Simon Snow is the Chosen One. He has been prophesized throughout the ages as the greatest of all the mages but most of the time he has no idea what he’s doing. During the school year he lives at the Watford School of Magicks and gets by a lot of the time with help from his best friend, Penny. He has an evil roommate who is also possibly a vampire, a girlfriend who may like said vampire, and a nemesis […]

Double Cannonball with a Bingo twist!

My Boyfriend is a Bear by Pamela Ribon and Cat Farris

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

October 26, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Illustrated My Boyfriend is a Bear, Pamela Ribon and Cat Farris (2 Stars) To be honest graphic novels are probably the most “not my wheelhouse” genre for me but since an illustrated book was required for Bingo My Boyfriend is a Bear checks off this square instead. I chose My Boyfriend because it was written by Pamela Ribon and since I am not a comic reader I didn’t want to read the first of a long series I had no intentions to complete. Obviously one has to […]

There isn’t really peace when you are done

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

October 19, 2019 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars Spoiler warning! This is the second book in a series, and this review will contain spoilers for the first book, Carry On. If you haven’t already read it, you should do yourself a favour and do so. Simon Snow was the Chosen One, destined to bring an end to the threat to all magic. Of course, it turned out that he himself was in fact the thing that was threatening the magic in the first place, and his mentor/father figure (and actual biological father, although none […]

I’m a Rowell Convert: Bingo #5!

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

October 16, 2019 by Ale 1 Comment

Why have I not read Rainbow Rowell until now? Why have I not listened to what everyone in CBR has been saying about Rowell for years? Eleanor & Park is my first foray into Rowell’s writing world, and I now need to consume everything she’s ever written. Both Faintingviolet and Crystalclear are big fans of hers, but as I tend to have a hard time with YA, I’ve steered clear. Which was a MISTAKE! Eleanor & Park is the most perfect story I’ve encountered in […]

Third time through, just as great. #CBRBingo – I Love This

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

September 30, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This book works on multiple levels for me: *It’s swoony and I love the characters. I find it comfortable and reassuring, like a big fluffy blanket. *It’s a smart take on Chosen One stories, upending tropes and challenging expectations. The first time through you think you know what’s going to happen, and then it doesn’t, and something much cooler happens instead. *It’s funny and incisive, and has good things to say about the human emotional cost of magic, of being caught inside a fantasy story. […]

I Thought Supernatural Had Exclusive Rights to that Kansas Song by Now

Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell

September 28, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

It’s been almost a year since the events of Carry On, and things aren’t alright.  Agatha was so fed up with magical quests and adventures that she is attending school in San Diego and left even her wand behind.  Simon, Baz and Penelope Bunce are living together, attending university, except that Simon isn’t exactly going or leaving the couch much at all these days. How does one move on with life after accomplishing the thing one was chosen to do?  How to deal with all […]
