I know that the CBR book club is reading A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, my next book, but I didn’t really pay attention to what one does with that. So, I read it and I’m writing a review and hopefully that will help add to the discussion. I know I owned this book as a kid, as I distinctly remember the opening chapter and that someone eats a liverwurst sandwich. I was one of the only people I knew at the time (still […]
Pride & Prejudice in Ohio
As a general rule I try to avoid sequels and modernizations of classic literature when possible (i.e, when it’s advertised glaringly). Sometimes though, the story is so good (Pride & Prejudice) and by a writer I have enjoyed (Curtis Sittenfeld), I can’t resist. Such is the case with Eligible, Sittenfeld’s go at a modern retelling of Austen’s best (imho). The crucial elements of the story are still there. Lizzy Bennet meets and despises haughty, rich Fitzwilliam Darcy. She has four sisters, most of which are […]
Familiar and Funny
And now for something completely different – David Sedaris’ Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977-2002. For those of you unfamiliar with his work (are there any of you out there), David Sedaris is a humorous essayist raised in North Carolina and currently living in England with his longtime partner Hugh. He became famous in the 90s with autobiographical essay collections like Barrel Fever and Naked, and continues to put out new books every few years. Apparently he has been keeping a diary since 1977 and after […]
I really disliked this
My quest to check out new book clubs continues. This time I read my first ever self-help book, You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. The organizer of this book club was interested in this book and it’s a woman author, so here we are. I absolutely hated most of it. I’d give it one star except I will admit that it made me think more seriously about my secret dream to become […]
And there are also Bees!
My book club of 4+ years is morphing into a supper club so I am testing out new book clubs in my area. Our local library branch has a Pardon My Youth club focusing on young adult literature, so I’ve signed up for this month’s meeting. January’s book is Laura Ruby’s Bone Gap, something I’d never heard of – which I’m sure will be true of most of their selections even though I do enjoy reading YA stuff. Bone Gap is the story of two […]
Suburban Page Turner
Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere has been on a lot of lists since it was published so I was excited to get my hands on it earlier this week. The novel is about so many things, really, but generally tells the tale of a family in Shaker Heights, Ohio, the Richardsons, and how they are each affected in strong and different ways by their tenants, Mia and Pearl Warren. The Warrens are nothing like the Richardsons have ever known in their progressive but rigidly-planned town, […]
