More romance in the Pacific Northwest

Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon

May 27, 2022 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

Man I like Rachel Lynn Solomon but I found this book lacked a bit of oomph for me. She has a niche, this is very true (are both leads Jewish residents of the Pacific Northwest? You are likely in a Solomon novel) and her writing is definitely engaging you. If I look at my rankings of Solomon novels, I still rank Today Tonight Tomorrow at the top, followed by We Can’t Keep Meeting Like This, with this book and The Ex Talk sort of tied (although I find the plot […]

A very specific genre done well: romances in the Pacific Northwest

We Can't Keep Meeting Like This by Rachel Lynn Solomon

I’ve read two of Solomon’s books, and she’s definitely got a knack for writing believable, flawed, realistically sexy relationships that are infused with her special sauce–namely, Seattle + Semites (of the Jewish varietal). If I had to rank this book, I’d say it falls below Today Tonight Tomorrow and on par with The Ex Talk. To get the top line out first: Quinn’s stress and anxiety and Driving Force take the wind of the sails of the book you think you’re going to get from reading the blurb–one […]

“Cool is the Kevin Jonas of compliments. It’s like saying your favorite color is beige.”

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Enemies to lovers done competently! Hurrah! Plot: Shay Goldstein is a public radio producer, but her real dream is hosting on the radio, even if her voice isn’t exactly standard for on-air personalities. Even though she’s been there for a decade, Dominic Yun, who literally just graduated (but with a masters) is already getting treated better than she is. He’s a patronizing dick and she’s a bitter bitch. But their bickering is so fun to listen to, they end getting maneuvered into hosting their own show […]

Targeting that local public radio niche audience

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

April 8, 2021 by wicherwill 3 Comments

WHY can’t we get half stars, books like this one are MADE for them. This is a 3.5 star book, or more accurately a 4 star book dropped down to 3.5 because while I will forgive many an implausible plot twist in the service of DRAMA, even I have a limit, and that limit was reached in this book. As I noted to my friend, this book is about 50% a walking talking advertisement for the benefits of having a robust, fulltime HR department. And […]

YA love letter to romance

Today Tonight Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

January 15, 2021 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

This book is fluent in the language of romance novels and it shows. It is heartfelt and sweet and full of tropes and it knows it. Enemies to lovers, forced partnership, small hiding spot for two – the works. It’s a romance novel that loves romance novels, and it wants you to too. It’s the type of book I feel is perfectly positioned for high schoolers because of much of it is about not being ashamed of loving what you love, especially if what you […]

A little rocky on this fake exes hosting a radio show romance novel but I liked it overall.

The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Thanks to Berkeley and Netgalley for the Advanced Reader’s Copy. This book and I went on a ride together. It didn’t really gel with me at first, but by the end, there was more of it that charmed me and worked for me than that didn’t. I will definitely read more books from this author going forward. The premise here is that Shay has been a radio producer at a public radio station in Seattle for ten years, and wunderkind Dominic is fresh out of […]
