I wrote a long review about two books and it’s longer than the books probably…

Sun, Moon, and Star: A Folktale from Korea. by Nancy So Miller

Beatrix and Her Friends by Anne Lambelet

September 29, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Folktales have always been a go-to read for me. I enjoy learning about other cultures and seeing how they have been interpreted. Plus, I enjoy comparing them with other cultures’ stories. One true folktale (it even says so in the title) is  Sun, Moon, and Star: A Folktale from Korea. The other, while not a pure folktale, I consider her stories to be folktale adjacent. It is a biography of Beatrix Potter, aptly named, Beatrix and Friends. Nancy So Miller took an established story of […]

Told in English and Chinese

Grandpa’s Magic Mask: A Story of Growth and Bravery in English and Chinese by Siping Wu

A House Just for Mommy: A Bedtime Story Told in English and Chinese by Dayong Gan

The Boy, the Deer, and the King: A Legend Retold in English and Chinese by Xiaochun Tang

Little Malan’s Debut: A Story of Courage Told in English and Chinese by Lumin Qian

I do not speak a second language. As an adult, I regret not working harder on that, but I take solace in the fact that there are bilingual books out there and I can read the English part and admire the second language. Usually this is French or Spanish, but I have noticed that Chinese is taking its place. I’m not sure if the Chinese in these four books is Mandarin or Cantonese, so please let me know if you know! All will be available […]

It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s SUPERBUNS!

Superbuns!: Kindness Is Her Superpower by Diane Kredensor

July 12, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr16bingo  Golden (for the “golden rules”)  Superbuns!: Kindness Is Her Superpower by Diane Kredensor is a cute story about real superheroes. Or more accurately, what makes you, an everyday person, a “superhero” to other people. There are cute illustrations that are fairly simple, but still support the story. This allows you to focus on the text, but are still able to enjoy the art as it is not lacking in fun or details Buns is a bunny who likes helping people in her community. The […]

Trees & Rabbits

Willow and Bunny by Anitra Rowe Schulte

March 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A few reviews ago I mentioned that too sweet is peppermint patties and hot chocolate. This time, this book is not exactly that sweet, but it is close to it. Willow and Bunny has a spiritual feeling that could be too sweet for some people, and maybe not enough for others. Anitra Rowe Schulte’s story is about a bunny who “hears a voice” and follows it, trusting it will not lead them astray. And sure enough they find the Willow tree and her shelter. Over […]

One plus one equals WAAAY too many rabbits

Too Many Rabbits by Davide Cali

December 16, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Another Edelweiss read was Too Many Rabbits. And I will assume that Davide Cali’s book was only a sample, as there were a few missing pieces, but enough was given so I know that in mid-March 2023 this book will be on all the lists. I will be honored for the illustrations of Emanuele Benetti, it will be noted for the text of Cali, and it will be applauded for the subject. I would not be surprised if Angus Yuen-Killick was given note of their […]

Are We Human or Rabbit?

Watership Down by Richard Adams

February 10, 2020 by Ale Leave a Comment

While my father’s bedtime stories to me were Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia, my husband’s father read him Watership Down. It’s a book I’d never heard of before meeting him, and as it was a huge part of his childhood, I felt I should finally get around to it. In a word, this book is about rabbits. On a larger scale, this book is about a journey, not unlike the hobbits’ trek in Lord of the Rings. But if you’re looking at this book metaphorically […]
