It’s starting to bug that every true crime book now has to be the “crime of the century” or, in this case, “the kidnapping that changed America”. Want to know what big change this historic kidnapping caused? The crime of kidnapping was changed from a misdemeanor to a felony. That’s it! That was pretty much its only legacy; no one that bungled this case even learned their lesson. A bunch of people failed spectacularly here and the only outcome was that kidnapping now had a […]
Where Were These Fairy Tales When I Was Growing Up?
Another gift from my Barnes and Nobles book soulmates. I don’t know how I lived without this book. I started reading it while killing time after work one day and then suddenly it was 3am and I was crying and I knew something amazing had happened to me. Agnieska has lived in the valley all her life. She, and everyone else that lives int he valley, owes their existence to the Dragon that lives in the tower and keeps the evil and corrupt Woods at […]
Okay, I Just Have to Admit It, I Hate Magical Realism
I tried, I really did. After Beloved, I thought I had turned a corner on my animosity for the magical realism sub-genre. Then I read this book and I just give up. There are hours of my life that I wasted reading this. (I know for some people, this is their favorite book ever, and if that describes you, just move along, there’s nothing for you here. Just turn around and never look back.) I bet you’re wondering what this book is about. So am […]
In a World of Gritty Comics, There is Squirrel Girl
And she’s just happy to be here! It’s actually really refreshing to have a superhero that has no twisted past baggage and crippling existential crises. Of course, if I had to be around Squirrel Girl 24/7, her excessive perkiness would probably grate on my very last nerve. But after reading some pretty dark comics, I was in the mood for a hero that’s excited to be starting college and wondering how many boxes of nuts is too many boxes of nuts for a dorm room. […]
Words as Weapons
This book’s masterful use of language makes everything I write about it seem pale in insubstantial. I don’t have the words to say how beautifully McEwan put words together. The words are good in this one, guys! The words! Part of the reason I loved this one so much is how I related to young Briony. A lot of times, people think kids are dumb (and they kind of are, even scientifically because the lobes are still forming), but that doesn’t mean they don’t have […]
Waiting for Lifetime to Buy The Rights
I mean, this book has love triangles, ghosts calling from beyond the grave, obsession, murder, even a Nice Guy (TM)! It’s not high literature, but it was fun. Its sincerity even got me hooked into caring about the characters, instead of the detached irony I was originally reading with. Isa was sent to live with her cousin, Alette, in South Africa. Where Isa was shy and introverted, Alette was talkative and charming. Growing up, they managed to lucid dream together, until Isa grew too scared […]
